Substance is the right choice, their Particle Brush and Smart Mask are my favorite tools.
Following tutorials or artists who inspired you and copy what they do is one way to cure laziness. It is easier if you have someone there to show the way, better than being stuck in the I-dunno-what-I-should-be-doing zone, you know ...at least that I is how I cure mine.

Substance Painter is honestly what I am looking forward the most, I only need to get the full motivation to finally finish a model haha. Can't wait to texture and work on that part, since I am stuck with modelling for a long time. I do progress, but often I am lazy to even open up Blender lol. There was a really good sale on Artstation recently and a got some sweet materials for cheap and alphas etc., ofc there are many free good ones aswell!

great to hear about your progress :) I was hype about modeling weapons when I started too. There are just so many juicy gun concepts out there, sometimes it can be overwhelming to choose one concept and dedicate your time and energy to. My problem for modeling weapons is that I skip projects easily, that is why I still don't have any polish/ final gun product. Glad to hear you are doing well with your weapon project. Baking normal is fundamental in game dev. I bake my maps in Substance Painter.

That's true. I even saw a video about professionals using kitbashes for quick production or background assets. I works really great! And yeah, game assests are different, I put a weapon image in background, side-view and model the base shape, then I give the weapon my own twist.
PS: Working on a new gun now, since I got design problems with the AWP :P

And I learned I need to do a highpoly model, and then retopology and bake to a lowpoly, so I decided alltogether to start a new gun and my progress is going well :) Will upload a WIP soon or later. I am amazed how baking normals work, if you ever heard of it!

Ye you could manually model the gun from scratch, that is usually how people go about modeling weapons for production. Kitbashing is more for concepting. In my case I use it for detailing big things such as spaceships.
