Upon spawning on the shore your first priority will be to acquire 2 Small Stones in order to craft an Improvised Knife. Walking along the beaches will often net you Small Stones, as well as Train Tracks & walking along marked Hiking Trails. Upon finding both Small Stones combine them in your hand to craft an Improvised Knife. (I've had alot of luck running up and down a length of railroad tracks back and forth which seems to trigger them to spawn.)












Note: You can skip this step if you have a knife.

The Chernarussian chicken is thriving after the outbreak, and it just so happens that we're going to hunt one. The Rooster and Hen roost in almost all coastal towns. While searching the towns be on the lookout for a Well if your hydration meter is getting low, as well as canned food to get you by until you can feast on your catch. Once you kill the chicken be sure to skin it and take its Bones & Chicken Steak. One thing to note is that Shovels and heavy melee weapons can sometimes ruin Bones so be aware.

Note: Killing a chicken can be skipped if you find other animal bones or an unlucky survivor.




While searching for a chicken another primary objective should be to find a Boonie Hat, the mark of a true Angler.

With the chicken dead, you have to find some clothing you'll use to make Rags. Once the clothing is found combine your Improvised Knife with it to create Rags. Once you have 2 stacks of 6 Rags you can begin to craft a Simple Fishing Rod.

1) Use your Improvised Knife to cut down large bushes (taller than your character) until you find a Long Stick.

2) Take 2 stacks of 6 Rags and combine them to make Rope.

3) Combine the Long Stick and Rope to make a Simple Fishing Rod.

4) Combine your Improvised Knife with the bones of the chicken to make a Bone Fishing Hook

5) Equip an extra Bone Fishing Hook to your Boonie Hat for later. (Not optional).

6) Now before we can reel in a hog, we need some bait (unless you're playing on Namalsk where fishing will require no bait). Take your Improvised Knife and aim at the ground until you can dig for Worms. (It's a little wonky about where it lets you dig). The Worms you dig up will be on the ground.






7) Combine a Bone Fishing Hook and a Worm to create Bone Fishing Bait.

8) Finally, combine your Improvised Fishing Pole and your Bone Fishing Bait.

Note: Fishing on Namalsk doesn't require any kind of bait. Fishing Poles & Fishing Hooks will spawn in capsized boats along the coast, these items are better as they always outlast their "knock off" counterpart.

Now that you've got a Fishing Pole and some bait, you're ready to unwind and catch some fish. After casting your rod your crafting bar will fill up, only release left click once a distinct animation happens, this animation is a fish biting your line and releasing left click will set the hook. After catching a fish your bait will be used up, so make sure to dig up another Worm and apply it to your hook. Hooks will also become Ruined after use so pay attention and reapply a hook when necessary.

There are 2 fish as of 1.07 and they are as follows;

The Carp











Yields 2x Carp Fillet's, spawns in freshwater ponds and lakes.














The Mackerel









Yields 1x Mackerel Filet, spawns in the ocean.













Note: Willies and Cooking Pots are often found from Fishing, so that big one that got away might have just been Ruined Willies. Both a Carp Filet and a Mackerel Filet will yield 800kcals after being cooked, making the Mackerel Filet superior because it takes less space.
