High Elf Mage: Dual Phantom Melee Build [Chaos 7 & 8 viable]
By ™Frostacus®
With the latest pc patch of 1.08, the melee mage was born! In this guide you'll find everything you need to become your own Powerhouse of pain & destruction as you slash, slice, dice, cut & explode your way through your enemies ranks!

This build is a melee oriented variation of the Weave n Beam setup & is capable of dishing out incredible numbers. It is brought to life by the addition of two great new items recently added into the game in this latest patch, the sword "Blade of Azyr" & the necklace "Phase Shift Amulet". Items that once acquired & combined with the bonuses from the "Caledon Dragontamer Set" can strike fear into the hearts of the many foes of chaos.

Skill Selections & Hotbar
Your Main attacking skills with this setup are going to be "Phantom Blade - Heroic", which thanks to the blade of azyr now provides both damage types used to proc your armor set bonus & "Aetheric Tornado - Mastered". Tornado's main purpose essentially is just for emergency healing as well as to lure/group mobs together for easier strikes.

And much like the more range oriented Weave n Beam build the rest of your active skills are chosen for the helpfull utility they provide, things like Damage buffs, Knockbacks/repels, Health regeneration, slows etc.

In addition to these skills i also make use of 2 other Alternative Passive skills to swap in at times. (mainly used for xp/loot speed farming on easier difficulties)

- "Master Alchemist" changed out for "Tomes of Knowledge" for the 20%xp boost.
&
- "Concentration - superior" changed out for "Scout's Chain Reaction" for the +30% movement speed on skill cooldown used
God Skill Tree & Legendary Ranks
GOD SKILL TREE PICKS: (Non-Season Pass/Pure DPS Version)

GOD SKILL TREE PICKS: (WITH Season Pass/Balanced Dps & Defense Version)

After many many hours of tweaking & trying out various different options these 2 different skill setups are my personal main choices to run for this setup, whether u want a Pure dps approach or a balanced/defensive setup booth have been working out great for the build so far.

(Note: the Balanced/2nd skill setup does require having the season pass)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LEGENDARY RANKS:

With the addition of the legendary rank system we now have a much needed endgame system in place to help further "progression". You'll want to reach at least a 15% proc rate or higher to get a decent uptime on the effect.
Depending on what your looking for (dps, defense or heals) what i've been doing so far & it seems to be working well with this build so far it funneling points into either
  • the "Punishment" skill in the hopes that it stacks with the +25% we already recieve from out active skills
    or
  • putting points into the "Endurance" Skill for the extra defense
Blessing Gem Combo's (Updated 10/10)
The blessing system has had an overhaul with this latest patch & overall I'm aiming to maintain a 50/50 approach in terms of dmg/defence with the blessings.
All 10 equipment slots currently blessed with =

(Shoutout to @Drasanil who suggested using the above blessing, it was an overall increase in both dps & defense.)

Below are a few various other blessings just to kind of showcase the different options available out there as well.

Weapons: [T5/green items are in Bold]

  • Phase Shift Amulet = 6.1% Crit, 17% Crit dmg, 1977 damage over time, 24% Gold, [+100% damage to nearby enemies]

Slots to keep an eye out for Ideal/BiS stat roll combinations: (confirmed possible in-game)
  • Bracers = Armor, Damage, Crit damage, Health
  • Rings = Crit chance, Crit damage, Damage and/or Armor Piercing/Cooldown reduction
  • Necklace = Armor, Crit chance, Crit Damage, Damage & Health
  • Staff = Armor Piercing, Crit chance, Crit damage, Damage & Health
  • Sword = Armor Piercing, Crit damage, Damage, Cooldown reduction & Health
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Useful stat priorities on gear to shoot for.
Offensive = Crit chance >= Critical Damage > Damage > Armor Piercing
Defensive/Utility = Armor > Health > Health regen > Cooldown Reduction

Stats i like to try and avoid if/when it's possible for the build = Cost reduction & loot quality.

My reasoning for the two is that we get a decent portion of our Health sustain via the passive skill "Quash Shield" by spending energy in exchange for health, so cost reduction effectively lowers our healing. And loot quality well that one is simply because it appears atm to be a wasted stat slot (unsure how effective it is)

New Tomb Kings C7 relic hunt video added in the video section, will update whole guide here soon as i can, as a few passives have changed/items nerfed & new stats (dot resist) to look out for on gear with the latest patches. As a whole though build still remains largely unchanged & has successfully clear Chaos 8 relic hunts with only half greens equipped.

Just wanted to give you some feedback. Got an Azyr blade now, and the skill is awesome. Thank you for this!

Some changes with respect to your build that I did:

1. The build harmonizes perfectly with the Ring of Dexterity (Invasion); so I use Denial + Dexterity

2. I swapped Fortress of Willpower for Arcane Manifestation Superior, which gives -20% too for 12 points but for the whole team. With enough CDR I got it up constantly.

Aaaah ... thx for the information. Now I want a proper sword even more - damn drop chances = always get what you don't need. I liked the phantom blade skill in general but the "movement" was the downside why I never used it again.
As soon as I got one I will definitvely test your build. But I "guess" I will incorporate some "burning ... +something"-passives, which used to work great atm on my end.

@Kanonen-Gerda, Currently with the "Blade of Azyr" equipped the spell version "Phantom Blade - Heroic" that we get thankfully no longer has that forced movement baked into it when you use the skill. Allowing us to fully remain stationary to proc the staff when needed. :)
Kanonen-Gerda 15 Oct, 2019 @ 4:11am
Sadly I did not get a proper Blade of Azyr so far, so i could not test. But a quick question: How does the Phantom Blade Skill work with the Relentless Sentinel staff. As far as I remeber the char is moving with phantom blade so that the staff would not proc?!
™Frostacus®  [author] 9 Oct, 2019 @ 8:43pm
Ok yup your right, after doing some testing with the "4k damage/6k health" blessing combo (RLGLR & GLRLG) it is indeed a substantial dps increase over the other ones. Good suggestion :)
™Frostacus®  [author] 9 Oct, 2019 @ 6:11pm
@Drasanil In past patches, assuming you had roughly 35-40+ crit chance going with pure Critical Damage stacking via blessings always seemed to have been the most beneficial in terms of dps, but to be fair i haven't tried many new combo's yet for blessings since this latest patch of 1.08.

As for the "Defender of Ulthuan" set i think it is great, plus it's really easy to swap over to using it without having to change the build & personally always keep a fully blessed set in my inventory for when certain missions with overtuned dots call for extreme tanking (cough "tzeentch maps" cough). Defense with that set on jumps upwards of 12 million n higher.
Drasanil 9 Oct, 2019 @ 11:02am
Also what do you think of the Defender of Ulthuan set? It's basically an inverted Caledor set, every swing of the sword heals 3% and gives a further 20% damage reduction.
Drasanil 9 Oct, 2019 @ 10:18am
Witth he new gem system isn't 2 reds +1 green link always the best choice, gives 3k-4k health and 3k-4k flat damage bonus, all the other stat combos including crit stacking seem to pale DPS and defense wise. Seems better to save Crit Chance for item roles and Crit Damage for god tree.

Wonderful guide ! Thanks a lot !
