Cheat FATE with Steam (no TP program)
By EvantyWelwyn
Want to cheat at FATE but Steam force-removed console commands and you don't trust third-party programs? Then you've came to the right place! Create new weapons and armors and change the requirements for old ones! No program needed!

PLEASE READ!
This guide/cheat could potentially let you use every item in-game at minimal cost and skill, if so wanted. Essentially you are allowed to change the values of items that already exist and create new ones. As far as as I am aware, this form of cheating does not allow you to actually change the values of your skills or your level. However, you can use this cheat to give you a lot of gold and use that with the bard to raise your fame and the enchanter to enchant your gear.

In order to cheat, you must edit the files directly. I have not tested everything and cannot guarantee 100% safety to your saved file(s), especially if YOU don't follow precise directions mentioned in this guide. To avoid possible crashing or complete lost of game, make a backup of the folder we will be editing in this guide! Thank you.
1. Getting Started
To get started, first we'll need to find the file location. Locate your steam folder: for windows (as default) it is as follows: User > C:drive > Programs (x86) > Steam

This path can change depending on how you downloaded Steam or if using a different startup system (e.g. mac.). Once there, this is the path you'll need to take: Steam > steamapps > common > FATE > ITEMS > es-US. (Make a backup file of the 'items' folder.)*

Now, in this folder is a item.dat file (don't sweat if you don't see a file extension name, you just have it turned off- it is not completely necessary). This will be the file we will be working with for the rest of the guide.

*Before moving on, MAKE A BACKUP OF THIS FILE ANYWHERE ELSE ON YOUR COMPUTER BESIDES THE FOLDER IT IS IN. It does not matter where as the only time you will have to access it again is if you mess up on the original file.
2. Convert and Change
After making a backup of the folder, go back to the original. Pull up your computer's default notepad. (It should come with your computer.) Now drag the .dat file to the notepad.

Let's say you want an Elven Sceptre but it's too slow, the damage isn't high enough for your wants, and you don't want to farm for it or buy it. In the notepad of the .dat file, press Ctrl + F to pull up a search box. In the box type in "Elven Sceptre". The original code will be as shown (not adding all because it's excessive):

<TYPE>:CLUB
<NAME>:Elven Sceptre
<RARITY>:900
<MINIMUM_DEPTH>:30

<MODEL>:ITEMS/elven_sceptre.mdl
<COLLIDEABLE>:0
<ICON>:ICONS/sceptre_elven.png:ICONS/sceptre_elven_a.png:48:144
<VALUE>:9967
<TAKEABLE>:1
<DAMAGE>:21:48
<ATTACK_RADIUS>:6.5
<STRIKE_RADIUS>:8.5
<SPEED>:NORMAL
<DROP_SOUND>:SOU...

Take note of the underlined. These will be the values you'd want to change. If you have another weapon in mind that you'd want it to be like, go ahead and look that up with the search box and note and copy the values of that one to this one or make up your own values. Simple, right? It is! This is the same for everything. Save and exit the file (make sure it's still in .dat format). Open FATE and enjoy the improved item!
3.0. Making a New Item
You're liking it so far and want to take it a step farther? Perhaps you don't want to completely change the stats of the vanilla item? Or you want the new and old item simultaneously? Well, here is where it gets interesting... and complicated.

First, open a new clean notepad. Open up the original item.dat file. Open FATE. At no point while FATE is up should you save the item.dat file.

If you already have the item you want in mind, opening FATE is not necessary.
If you do not have an item in mind, let's use FATE to speak to all the merchants in town to find an item you like the appearance of. Do not worry about the effects of said item. You could use a Light Handaxe (the newbie item you get when making a new character, if you wanted.)
If you still haven't found an item you like, go to the dungeon and come back.
Assuming you've found one, let's move on. At this point you can keep the game up or close it. It doesn't matter. Just have the item's name remembered or written down.

Open the window to the item.dat file. Ctrl + F and type in the item's name. This will be the base code of your new item.

Note 1: It should be mentioned that if it is a really enchanted item that has a really long name like "Bizulthak's Disciple's Adept's Gloves of Wealth," it will not be listed in this file. So for this example, the actual item's name is Adept's Gloves. You can add the enchantments later.

Note 2: It should also be mentioned superior, elite, and legendary prefixes (that require fame to wield) will also not be listed. At this time, I do not know if there's a way to add this to your new item.

Copy the code of the item you want from ITEM to /ITEM. If EFFECT sections are between the bottom stat and the /ITEM, include it too. Paste this code into the new clean notepad. Before continuing, save this new note as a .txt (default) file somewhere easy to locate (e.g. desktop). Now let's edit this item to your liking!

Using the next two sections of this guide and the previous section, you can edit and update the new item to your OP satisfaction!

Once done, open the original .dat file along with your .txt file. Copy the .txt file and paste it to the very bottom of the .dat file right before the "END OF FILE" section. Save and open the game and enjoy your new item!
3.1. Stats and Meaning
You can add and change stats to your new weapon/armor. Everything listed here are all stats in the file and theoretically available to add to your item manually. If you need examples of anything listed, Ctrl + F the word in the original .dat file.

Key:
Ranges are 0-X.
0 means nonexistent or unobtainable.
1 means abundant.
The higher the number the less likely you are to get it (except for 0).
X is maximum which varies and will be listed. The max will always mean a lot of farming:
To put in perspective, the town portal scroll's rarity is 3 while Zin's Vengeance is 998.
  • Rarity and Fishing Rarity's max is 1000.
  • Depth and Fishing Depth max is 10,000,000.
  • Price value max is unknown. Some say 620,000 but I have done 10,000,000,000 and it worked (surprisingly).

Stats and Meaning

Underlined and bold are the only stats I personally recommend editing if you want.

<TYPE>: Type of Item it is. This includes items that are unobtainable.
  • Weapon Type: Axe, Sword, Hammer, Club, Staff, Polearm
  • Armor Type: Shirt, Boots, Gloves, Ring, Helmet, Belt
  • Activated Type: MagicAnvil, Statue, Shrine, WellnessFountain, HealFountain, ManaFountain, StaminaFountain
  • Dungeon Type: Container, WeaponRack, SmallChest, ChestMedium, ChestLarge
  • Usable Type: Gem, PetFood, Scroll, Spell, FishingPole, etc.?
<NAME>: The name of an item. This can be literally anything as it is purely cosmetic.
<RARITY>: Rarity of the item either by being sold or gathered in the dungeon.
<FISHING_RARITY>: Rarity of catching it while fishing.
<MINIMUM_DEPTH>: Minimum depth of the dungeon of getting this item.
<MAXIMUM_DEPTH>: Maximum depth of the dungeon of getting this item.
<MINIMUM_FISHING_DEPTH>: The minimmum required depth of getting this item.
<COLLIDEABLE>: No idea. I think it's only 0 or 1.
<VALUE>: Cost of the item when buying. (I do not know the buy:sell ratio.)
<TAKEABLE>: 0 or 1. The ability to take as an item(?). 0 is no, 1 is yes.
<DESTRUCTIBLE>: 0 or 1. The ability to destroy an item. 0 is no, 1 is yes.
#<DAMAGE>:minimum:maximum (Italics is default, keep it that way. DO NOT REMOVE.)
<DAMAGE>: Minimum damage dealt to maximum damage dealt.
<ATTACK_RADIUS>: 1-12. Distance from character it attacks.
<STRIKE_RADIUS>: 1-12. Distance from character it can strike.
<SPEED>: Slow, Normal, or Fast. Speed of the item.
<SHADOW>: No idea. I think it's only 0 or 1.
<MERCHANT_MINIMUM>: No idea. I think it deals with depth.
<MERCHANT_MAXIMUM>: No idea. I think it deals with depth.
<USEABLE>: The ability to use it(?). I think it's 0 or 1.
<USES>: Amount of uses before it's destroyed (such as a scroll)
<EXPANSION>: No idea. I think it's only 0 or 1.
<DAMAGE_BONUS>: Damage type to Amount. Electric, Ice, Fire, and Undead. Unknown max amount.

3.2. Effects
As mentioned above, you shouldn't worry about the effects (or enchantments) of a vanilla item because here is where you can add your own to be as awful or OP as you want!

First, let's talk about the stats in this section:

Stats in Effect
<ACTIVATION>: When will it be active? This is always Passive.
<TYPE>: The type of skill stat it is. To my knowledge there is a total of 35 types (listed below).
<DURATION>: When will it be activated? This is either instant or always.
<VALUE>: Ranges -100-100, I think. This is the percentage or amount of said type you want it to go up or down. For negatives just use the dash (-).

<DAMAGE_BONUS>: The only stat that does NOT go between EFFECT and /EFFECT. It ranges from 1-100, I think and are seen at the bottom of an item's coding right before /ITEM:
<DAMAGE_BONUS>:FIRE:#
<DAMAGE_BONUS>:ICE:#
<DAMAGE_BONUS>:ELECTRIC:#
<DAMAGE_BONUS>:UNDEAD:#

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you copy + paste these from this guide, make sure /EFFECT goes to the next line. For some reason Steam's Guides automatically forces it to the previous line. Also make sure to edit the '#' to be a number.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
What's the easiest way to get the new item besides farming?
The rarity values. General rarity is the rarity of being found or ability to buy from merchants. Fishing rarity is the ability to get the item through fishing. Make sure you add a fishing minimum if you're going that route. My recommendation is to get fishing rarity and fishing minimum to the value of 1 and go fishing in town. It might take a few times but you'll eventually get it. Keep fishing and you'll get an abundance of them!

I want money now!
Fair enough! Change fingerlings in the file to have an extreme value. Save and open game - sell all of them! Easy cash, minimum effort.

@voidspeaker, hey! That's awesome! I'm glad you were able to do that! I have no idea how to do that (I mean, I made this guide and forgot how to do this) but I think it's super cool that you were able to figure it out based on my guide! :D So glad I could help!

hey so fun fact, thanks to your guide I have figured out how to add in new fish to transform my pet into different creatures than are available in basegame (it's running around as a gryphoness right now, doing magic and all kinds of fun stuff) so thank you for making this accessible

<EXPANSION> is for sockets. if you set this value to 1, you can add <SOCKETS>:# in the line right below that, and this edit allows the item you made to be purchased/fished for/found in the dungeon with sockets already in it. (no more relying on rikko).

very good guide for people who can read. I can't read.
