In a group discussion, Alphas tend to want to dominate the room, and Betas tend to be timid and will speak to back up the Alpha. Sigmas are usually silent, not from having nothing to say, but to absorb and process not just the verbal information, but also the non-verbal. In their silence, Sigmas allow their eyes to wander and read the room—the group's facial expressions, posture, and even their ticks, all the while listening to what the Alpha speaker is saying. From assessing these multitude of things in as quickly as a 10 seconds, the Sigma can then ascertain whether or not the Alpha speaker will reason with a rebuttal, or if the rest of the group is even interested in what's being discussed. The Sigma will ask himself, "Is this discussion even worth my time?" It's this very reason why the first person to usually to leave a circle of discussion is the Sigma.
