An old lady newbie, with gnarly hands, slow reflexes, and a potato.
: Casual. Gentle. Story. Adventure, puzzlers, PnC, HO. Indie.
: Dexterity, speed, stress, unkind. Tearjerkers, pink-o-mania.
--------------------

I like games that are casual and gentle. Prefer a proper story with some thought behind it - can be explicitly told or show-don't-tell. Adventure, puzzlers, point-and-click, hidden objects. Happy to support Indie games. My potato laptop prefers smallish games <5GB. And I play with only KB+M, no controller.

With a strong dislike of being subjected to scares, and with no dexterity or speed, no skills, and only very basic gear, I am unsurprisingly not a fan of :
platforming, arcade, combat, killing, timed, creepy, stress, jumpscares (argghhh!), blood-n-gore, cruelty, unkind, "-ist" of many kinds, and such.
Nor am I a fan of heavy-handed "lessons learned" or the-moral-is. Or cutie-pie adorability and pink extravagances, including manga/kawaii/anime visuals. Or obvious emotional manipulation. And very tired of sexist tropes and other stereotyping.

Really, really don't like pixelart (yeah, I know!) . And my oldish eyes prefer an artstyle that is reasonably well-lit. Be that bright colours, or a more subdued palette, or greys, browns or black-and-white. Even if for nothing else, therefore not keen on space settings, caves, nighttime urban, or dungeon crawlers.

I wish, wish, wish that developers would make games that are consistent in style and content. I hate non-skippable arcade minigames in a PnC adventure, for example. Or a sudden jumpscare thrown into an otherwise kind and gentle game. Please DON'T do that. Hmpfff!

And while we're on the peeves and rants: What's with those stupid typewriter sound effects, and text presented at any rate slower than instant. Line-by-line, word-by-word, or - OMG !! letter-by-letter, is just tedious, highly annoying, and headache-inducing. Cut it out already. And - come on devs - manual saving is NOT too much to ask for in a game. Nor legible fonts. Nor grammar and spelling checks by someone competent in the language.

But to end on a positive note: Wow, I'm so grateful for the thoughtful and helpful reviews posted by so many people. Both on curated sites and on individual player profiles. A wealth of useful information and guidance for a newbie like me. I especially appreciate those who take a moment to mention if a game is OK to play on KB+M without controller. You make my day! Thank you to all :steamhappy: :emberhappy: :tinybulb: :shellebration: :pippin1: :messiaheon:
On COMMENTS
Please be polite and considerate if leaving comments.

I'm not on Steam to 'collect' friends. Am very reticent on friending, especially random strangers.
But if we seem to share same interests in (smallish) kind and gentle games, or you're another *newbie* older person (60+ or thereabouts), then leave me a couple of lines in my comment field, and I'll consider it :granlostwords: :happystar2022:

And please don't leave random hi's or season's greetings or such. Or text art . That's really not my cup of tea, at all - and will be deleted, if any.
Thanks !

I love reading other people's thoughtful reviews, so decided to make mine open for public view too.
Such as they are...
Here's hoping my tuppence-worth of opinion may be helpful to some :carto_snowman:
A poem - to share:
Autumn has come, and winter drawing in with the first frosty nights and the very first touches of snow too. So I was put in mind of a favourite poem about the changing seasons:

The seasons
- Arild Nyquist

Has 5 verses, but the first two, in translation are:

Now autumn is here
and autumn is a small yellow man
who comes out of the woods
with his suitcase and picks the leaves from
the trees and takes the flower stalks away and many
of the birds, and then he paints the sky
grey and dark, and makes sad puddles in the roads.

Next comes a small white lady
and she is the winter she is, and she carries shovel and backpack
and lays snow across the land, and snow clots
up into the trees, and then she puts people
into thick scarves and hats and frozen puffs out of
their mouths - and puffs of smoke out of the chimneys
on the houses too - and she paints the sky cold and
white and puts frost into the air.
(...)

And then the three final verses are about spring, and then summer, and then round again to autumn, showing the seasons going round and round and round again. His poetry has an easy naivité, with quiet humour peeping through the cracks, and great for reading out loud. A favourite for many!

In the original :
ÅRETS TIDER av Arild Nyquist
(utdrag)

I'm not sure we're supposed to understand ALL of what's happening, there's that aura of mystery (:
I had at least one reaction like "ah yes... wait, what?" :behappy:

Glad to hear you liked the game :flamey_happy:

I'm still the only one they mention with special thanks? Haha cool, though I'm not sure how I deserve that tbh... A dev sent me a direct message about something I mentioned in the forum, and I kept giving unsolicited feedback and bug descriptions. Did send a player log by email at one point, but I've done that for other games along with many other people...
I can only guess they didn't have that many testers that weren't from the same high-skills community, and getting stuff fixed right after release made a bigger difference than later help (like yours).

Haha yeah, I bought it during a sale a while ago because it was dirt cheap and made me laugh. So last night I had that sudden thought "What if writing curator reviews is NOT my job? What do I really feel like playing right now?" - went through my... game-medicine cabinet, saw the snail game and was like "yeah, that sounds about right for how I'm doing these days" :behappy:

Hello! It's great to connect with you. I noticed that you're interested in click-based and soft games, just like me. I'd love to hear more about the games you've played and enjoyed. By the way, I'm a 22-year-old from China and I'm excited to get to know you better. Looking forward to our conversation!

Hello! I've sent you a friend request because I'm also already older and like you, I too like cozy, peaceful, relaxing games but of course also other genres. Feel free to view my profile, screenshots, wishlist or games I own. Your games or wishlist are not public, so I don't know how many we might have in common but by your screenshots, I can see that I also own Dorfromantik and Preserve and love them both. So we most probably have many more games in common. :-)
