Like all others, I too spent 1 hour of my life trying to get this thing working. Luckily, I found a way to get this running. PLEASE NOTE: I didn't downgrade to 1.0.8.0 or 1.0.7.0 and was running the latest version (Multiplayer removed).

All you have to do is go to the NVIDIA Control Panel and go to Program Settings, select gta4.exe and run it with your "High performance GPU". This will fix the VRAM issue as either ways it is going to use your GPU's VRAM only. Unfortunately, it will not show your GPU's VRAM in-game so you will likely be stuck with 512mb vram limit even if your GPU has 2gb+ vram and if you go above it the game will simply not start and you will be stuck with the infinite loading screen. I was getting 386mb VRAM usage at 1080p high so I don't know much about 4K.

Another change which you'll have to do in the NVIDIA Control Panel is to set the Max FPS at 30. I know this sucks but that's the only way to run this game in a stable way. Keep in mind that my GPU can easily run this game 60fps+ and most likely everybody's as a matter of fact but this game... perhaps was never intended for that. When you set the game at 30fps then the UI will feel jittery but the game will run really well. There will be some occasional screen tearing which can be fixed by turning vsync on.

This very well worked for me and I hope it will for you too, I know 30fps is a serious let-down but there's no other way out. But if you still want 60fps and all then better downgrade... although that will cost you more time and doesn't work for everyone, and if you want achievements like me - then this is the only way.

about the saves, this game supports only cloud saves thanks to Rockstar's Social Club DRM. So internet is a MUST. Also to ensure your game is saved I suggest you to go to the safehouse after every mission and save your game by sleeping on the bed, then choose a save slot.

I also suggest you to use different save slots for TLAD and TBoGT or else it will just write over your main gta 4 save.

The mod support of this version sucks. Luckily OpenIV works and I was able to install car mods but all the main mods that made this game awesome don't work anymore, here's a list of all the mods that I've tested and work with this version:

I hope this helped you guys on figuring out what to do as there aren't many guides for the 1.2.0.43 update as all forums suggest at downgrading the game. Fact is, I want cloud saves as well as achievements which I can't trade for a downgrade. If you're planning out on getting this game then this is all you have to know. Also, Multiplayer has been removed and if you want it, you'll have to downgrade.
Also you will have a hard time completing the last mission (Tip: Listen to Kate and Kill Dimitri first or Roman will die) thanks to the innumerous bugs in it, I had to do this mission around 10 times to finally get it right.


turns out the commandline.txt dependency which was removed in 1.2.0.43 still works with Steam's commandline option. Just write -availablevidmem2048 and the game will be able to use 2gb of your VRAM, although it never will. And weirdly enough I'm getting 60fps once I added the command. Maybe the game is as foolish as Rockstar is greedy.

Pro tip: if you put "sus" in front of someone's name in chat they will trust you and vote him out
