The recent reviews, in my opinion, do not do this game any justice.

A lot of people are down-voting this game because of the semi-recent update and efforts taken by Team17. Don't get me wrong, the new British faction is awful. It gets to a point where you groan after playing British more than twice. The guns are terrible and make no sense, and need to be re-balanced. Why are there three variations of the Lee Enfield?
Even though the British faction is trash, the two new maps are fun and the rest of the gameplay is mostly the same. The game doesn't have any air features, so you wont see planes or helicopters like games that take place in more modern eras, like RS2V or Squad. I think the level of complexity is what makes this game so appealing. You don't need to have a PhD in History to play, and that's what makes it so fun. The gameplay loop is extremely enjoyable and really doesn't get old. I may not have that many hours, but everyone I play with enjoys this game as much as I do.

In summary, the game is really fun even though the recent updates haven't been up to par with previous ones. I wouldn't suggest buying this game at full price, which to be fair is egregious. But for $20-30 USD it's definitely worth getting a few friends to pick it up and storm the beaches.
