+rep you gather all of your relatives and all of her relatives and you announce that you are now engaged. What this does is prevent you from divorcing the woman. This is exactly the patriarchal idea. Since you can't leave each other (as it simply wouldn't be accepted in your family and society), you now have to live with that person. In doing so your love eventually settles down and you get to show your true sides. There are a lot of stuff you learn about your partner that way, and most of it you probably won't like. This helps the other person realise their flaws and better themselves. This is something you could never realise if you aren't married, or at least it would be much much harder. If someone else tells you the exact same critiques it will hurt you and you'll leave them, being married prevents you from doing so. It's a 2 way relationship and I think since there's a lot less patriarchal pressure people get divorced so much more often then they did in say 30 years ago.
