The game as of right now, is a disappointment, several features that were in the alpha were just completely scrapped, and now this game is just a husk of what it once was, albeit there wasn't much content before. The way progression works would be fine, as I have nothing against the gear progression vs. exp, but the way you lose all your special items (Hang glider, Boat, etc.) and the way gear resets after each region doesn't really seem to make the game enjoyable in the long run, although there's "+" gear that can cross over, it can only cross over ONLY to adjacent region making it so you never really get to keep the "+" gear that you sit there grinding for. I think that if the player were to start at the (0, 0) point and the enemies scaled up as you moved farther away from that point, and if the idea of region locked gear and region locked special items, was scrapped the game would make for a better long term game that people could come back to, and feel as if they've progressed their character, but it would make the rarity on gear somewhat odd, as you'd have some 1 star gear being better than 5 star. As for the "artifacts" which raise your "level," they seem to be complete garbage, I've gotten a few in hopes of making my character stronger in the next regions but all I got was climbing speed +4% and swimming +6%. I hope the game can be improved, so that it will last in the long run, but as of right now I'd stay away from it.
