I waited maybe longer than I should have to play this game. And I am not disapointed, it combines everything I could possibly want in a futaristic dystopia from the weapons to the story I have no complaints! 10/10

The game is fun, but surprisingly slow

Neon Abyss is a fun game with lots of exploration; highly recommended. Waiting for this game to come out was a real trip, it looked so fun and the demo had plenty of action-packed into it, however, it was disappointing that I couldn't make any progress. When the actual game came out I was pleasantly surprised to see the changes between the demo and the full game, but unfortunately, you have to unlock other character's tree's before you can unlock the. The game itself is highly entertaining, has creative puzzles, and is full of secrets.

NA is a roguelike shooter, think "Dungreed was made by Enter the Gungeon," or Death's gambit plus neon pink guns. the enemies in the game are interesting in the way they are created, there's what I believe are called "Pills" these little blue or orange creatures. They grow in tiers, from 1 to 5, the 1st tier is a blue or orange blob, blue blobs drop a worm upon death that can be stomped on to get a coin. Eventually, you'll find a high tier Pill, the big circular Pills are special, blue ones split into two blue bats that shoot bullets, while Orange ones bite and drop bombs upon death, there's even two bosses the gods of Pills. Sometimes you'll find red spiky Pills that become more prevalent in later levels. I digress, of course, the game is very fast-paced, for the most part, lots of shooting and no lack of options, from the guns to the chests, to the items and pets. Pets are especially intriguing, you'll pick up eggs along your journey almost at random, then after a while, they hatch, either into nothing or a random pet, pets do special things and can evolve, but they can also die, so be careful.

Neon Abyss has an interesting way of creating puzzles, occasionally you'll stumble across a room with several crates and a barrel on top, breaking the creates will send the barrel to the ground where exploding it breaks the floor to unlock treasure, pretty simple puzzle, but the real challenge is not exploding the barrel during the fight when you enter the room. In other rooms there are stone cages surrounding treasure or valuables and throwing a grenade at just the right spot will unlock all of them at once. There are even some locked doors that can be bypassed with tricky movement abilities, for the most part, the puzzles aren't difficult, but it's managing your resources and battlefield that allows you to maximize progress.

On that note, the game comes with several finite resources you have to manage to progress in the game, Hearts, Shields, Crystals, Grenades, Keys, and Coins. The only one you actually NEED is Hearts of course, but the rest of them are important too, Shields essentially add health, they can stack infinitely, but always break before hearts, in some cases, you'll minimize your heart containers to 0 and the only way to survive is using shields. Every finite resource in the game has potential to unlock something interesting, some doors require keys, yeah, but some require explosives or coins, and even crystals, anything that requires crystals can be switched to require hearts instead, be careful though because once it's switched it can't be reversed and there's a little bar at the bottom right of your screen that is filled with either purple or red, purple or "wisdom" grows when you use crystals and don't get hurt ever, red or "blood" grows when you use your hearts/shields and whenever you get hurt. When the bar is fully filled it unlocks a secret room on the map, only accessible from a common teleport room. The secret room changes depending on what path you are currently on, a wisdom room will give you two options of accessories to choose from, accessories give you permanent bonuses like flying wings or double bullets, however, the red room gives you 3 options, but to even see these options you must sacrifice a heart container, lowering your max health is a dangerous gambit, but maybe you have other ways to protect yourself, or maybe that item is far too valuable.

I can cede however that the game stops your momentum pretty frequently, you can only progress to the next big boss max before restarting your run, on top of that, not every run is created equal, sometimes you'll be down a finite resource you need, or you're only getting 1 thing that you can't use, maybe you've won the lottery, but can't spend it because the door to the shop requires crystals, and you don't have the health to spare. That's ok though, perhaps even warranted, because it adds variety and mystery to your run, but I do have to say that increasing the skill tree is a grueling experience, since in order to level up a skill you need to collect yellow crystals from every boss you defeat. You get 1 per boss, and there's 1 boss per level, on level 5 you fight a big boss and the run is reset if you win, increases the cap to 8 and repeat, every skill takes 1 - 10 crystals to acquire, increasing as you progress, and you only get 1 skill tree at a time. So upward movement is going to take a few runs before you can get anything top-shelf from the bar, I haven't even finished the first skill tree.

All and all the game is fun, it's a lot of fun for sure, the game isn't very demanding and the runs don't take much time if you don't mind not exploring every room possible. But the game also leaves a lot to be explored new weapon combinations and pets are always fun to come across, not to mention the boss fights. And while the game likes to stall your progress it's not meant to be accomplished in 1 run, it's a roguelike game, you're supposed to sprint and explore, if the game didn't want you to die then it would punish you for dying, but Neon Abyss condones it, no, they ENCOURAGE dying because with every death comes a swath of new possibilities. The only caveat I really have against this game is that it's only singleplayer if I could show this game to my friends and explode together in a tsunami of pink and blue lasers, then that would be the goal, but until then I'm going to continue sprinting down the endless hallway with my laser cat and wizard cap blasting everything including myself. 9/10 *multiplayer would be cool

Early Access Review
My opinion of the game has changed a lot since the recent updates.
Stoneshard is a phenomenal rpg game that simulates ever organic in game event with several game elements that can be interacted with and that alter the state of the game. Honestly it can be a little confusing, when you first start, during my first run there was a merchant missing from the town, it wasn't until later that I realized he was kidnapped and I was meant to rescue him for a generated quest. The game is a lot more difficult than I expected, most of my level 1 characters died to foe events I underestimated like random packs of wolves or rushing the first contract. But if you die your character some time to get situated and treat hostiles with respect then you should be fine. My main issue with the game right now is the fact that several game mechanics have yet to be implemented like character creation, and several skill trees, I'm really looking forward to the sabotage skill tree when it gets added since reputation is a real mechanic that effects your environment although it's kind of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ that dogs can act as witness to your crimes. There's a couple janky game elements, like the clunky movement, but I'm confident that it will all be sorted out by the time the game fully releases.
100% I reccomend buying the game now even just to give it a test, the company is clearly dedicated to the final product and all the help an indie game company can get is well warranted. I just want to make my own character now please.

This game reminds me a lot of Bastard Bonds, but with less muscular eye candy and more lore

EBF5 is a fantastic RPG game that combines a comic like style of storytelling, with the fluidity of turn-based fighting games like Octopath traveler and Persona, a great aspect of the game being the lack of grinding, many fights you can avoid, and there are no random encounters.

I love the game's graphics, but that's about it.

The game moves incredibly slowly, the sprites are buggy, and the music doesn't fade out with ease.

The combat is ok, but you have to wait a substantial amount of time to heal your party mates in the beds after combat.

Also the game will not stop pestering you to spend money on needless microtransatctions, the first thing you see when you get in the game is an offer for you to buy crystals, throught the game, up untik the end it's "Hey, psst, this limited time offer for a free game to trick you into spending money is over here!"

Forgive me if I DON'T want to buy your blasted crystals!

oh and, you have to go through a loading screen to leave the game, like what??
