Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review – A Disappointing Step Back for Bioware

As someone who has been a long-time fan of Bioware’s games, I don’t typically write reviews. However, I felt compelled to share my thoughts on Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While the game is by no means a disaster, it certainly falls short of the high standards set by its predecessors, leaving me with mixed feelings.

The Good: Combat, UI, and NPCs
Let’s start with the positives. The Veilguard shines in its combat mechanics and user interface. The gameplay is smooth and engaging, with a solid balance between action and RPG elements. The combat flows naturally, allowing for tactical depth without overwhelming the player. Additionally, the UI is intuitive, making it easy to navigate menus, equip gear, and manage your party.

The game also does an excellent job with its NPCs. The cast is vibrant, diverse, and full of potential. The characters feel distinct, with personalities that add life to the world. I found myself genuinely invested in the stories and interactions of my companions, and there’s no doubt that the voice acting and writing are some of the game's strongest aspects.

The Bad: Lack of Lore and Story Integration
However, despite the strong character work, The Veilguard fails to live up to the rich lore and world-building that fans of the Dragon Age series have come to expect. One of the main draws of the earlier games was the ability to carry forward the consequences of your past decisions. Whether you played as the Warden, Hawke, or the Inquisitor, the world felt alive, shaped by your choices.

Unfortunately, The Veilguard doesn’t deliver on this. The game feels disconnected from the broader Dragon Age universe. I went into the game hoping to see how my past choices had influenced the world, but it doesn't acknowledge the rich history and characters established in the earlier games in any meaningful way. The lack of continuity with previous Dragon Age titles is a huge disappointment for anyone who has spent hours—if not hundreds of hours—investing in those worlds.

The Ugly: Forced Inclusivity and Immersion Breakers
Then there’s the issue of forced inclusivity, which significantly detracts from the overall experience. Bioware has always been progressive in its approach to diversity, but in The Veilguard, it feels more like a checkbox exercise rather than a natural inclusion. The “woke” lectures and forced mechanics broke my immersion repeatedly. For example, certain character customization options, like surgery scars, feel unnecessarily separate from the body scars menu—these kinds of small details add up to make the game feel less polished.

Even more jarring are the misgendering scenes, which feel tone-deaf and out of place. These moments don’t come across as organic to the narrative; instead, they seem like an attempt to be inclusive that ultimately falls flat. The goal may have been to reflect a wider range of experiences, but instead, it often feels awkward and detracts from the game’s world-building.

A Final Disappointment
Ultimately, The Veilguard feels like a mediocre action-adventure game with RPG elements, rather than a true Dragon Age entry. The smooth gameplay and strong character work are overshadowed by a lack of meaningful story connections to the established lore, and the inclusion of poorly executed “woke” mechanics ruins the immersion. For me, this game marks the end of my pre-order relationship with Bioware. As much as I’ve loved games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age in the past, I can no longer justify supporting a company that seems so out of touch with its fanbase.

Final Score: 5/10 – Average
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an average game—nothing more, nothing less. It has its moments, but it fails to live up to the legacy of the Dragon Age series. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer, there's a lot to be disappointed by here. Hopefully, Bioware can course-correct in future titles, but for now, this will be my last pre-order from them.

Long load times. Poor optimization and the infamous PTW Snail Games yeah it was a mistake to get hype for this. I want my refund.
