It causes me physical pain to give a Zero Escape game a negative review, but it's basically the game equivalent of watching your favourite tv show go off the rails. I'm aware that if you've played the first two there's nothing I can say to dissuade you from playing this one. Just keep your expectations low.
It does have Carlos in it though so that's pretty epic

Cool game if not as good as 7. Starts off slow but gets good about halfway through.

First, the negatives. The game has a tendency to have long (like 5+ minutes) unskippable cutscenes before bosses. There's a horrendous difficulty spike a few hours before the end (the mountain), after being pretty easy up to that point. The final boss is not balanced for you to just do the main story without side content. As soon as you get to his second phase he just one-shots your entire party. Have fun grinding for the next two days to get strong enough to kill him.

Other than those complaints, I would recommend. The story is interesting enough and the combat system is pretty great. Overall, I found it overrated but good.

The remaster is fine if you can get over the faces somehow being worse than the PS2 version. Will update when I've played X-2.

999 is incredible, although I've only played the DS version so I can't comment on this port.
Will update once I've played VLR.

Update: VLR is good, if not quite as good as 999. Don't look anything up, this is one of those series where you want to go in as blind as possible.

If it hangs on loading screen immediately after character creation, try running the legacypc version

Okay. I just left Telos. I'm liking the story and themes so far but it's executed in a way that makes it a boring, unbalanced, barely playable slog. I can't even imagine how bad it is vanilla.

Played with The Reunion mod, highly recommend. Literally one of the best games I've ever played in my life.
