-Intro-

I've been playing Witches x Warlocks for the past couple days and I've got quite a few things to say about it. This review represents my personal opinion and is not a professional appraisal but I'll be giving my best to stay as factual as possible to give a fair assessment to you all. :)

-Overview-

First of all, for those who may not like to read long reviews, its a short, lighthearted, funny and sweet stat-raising Otomoge by the developers of Royal Alchemist which is totally worth giving a try, especially if you can't spend money on games at the moment or just need something (ca.1h per walkthrough) short to kill some time! It introduces quite a few unique features, which definitely appeal to the LGBT+ Community since you get to customize your character's voice and body and have a choice to pursue a male, female and non-binary love interest! Not to mention having a very loveable and cheerful MC yet still typically very obnoxious!

-Basics-

We're starting out with our MC (orig. Fay Nightshade). The game developers give us a whole lot of choices to customize our MC unlike most origin otomege do. You can change quite a few aspects including first name, body build, skin color, hair color, pronouns used by characters in the game to refer to MC and even the voice-type which you will hear quite frequently yet rarely for full-voiced lines but rather for remarks like “Sorry", ”Hi“, or “Ouch” which is already quite impressive since they do not charge anything for the base game by itself but for the DLC.

Other aspects of our MC is the cheeky and irresponsible attitude as well as being a self-proclaimed matchmaker and a troublemaker for literally everyone else in that matter. MCs personality and habits have led to the plot of the game “Try to cram for the exams in 7 Days which happens to be on Halloween so you don't get expelled, Oh and while you're at it you've gotta matchmake yourself too!” Easy Peasy right? I think not!

A quick thing to note is that all characters but especially MC in the flesh are very western-oriented with their behaviour and customs i.e being very touchy-feely, blunt and generally the complete opposite of modest.

-Love Interests-

Let's talk about the love interests! We've got a total of 4 options (3 without DLC) to choose from which are all very sweet in their own ways. There is a romantic ending for each of the 4 (3 without DLC) love interests and an additional neutral ending as well as a bad ending which will naturally occur when you fail your exams. Your goal is to let each of them help you in your studies and preferably scoring a date as well while you're at it!

I'm going to start with Zero, my personal favorite! He's a poltergeist and MCs childhood friend, helping her here and there despite always being grumpy about it. In short, a typical hard shell-soft core kind of personality. He is also the first character you will meet in the game as well as the only male love interest out of 3 choices in total (Zero, Damion, Carmilla) unless you bought the DLC and unlocked Lawrence along with it.

Next you have Damion! A pure and gentle sweetheart. They are a kind of Frankenstein-like monster and the non-binary love interest of the game! You seriously couldn't guess their gender by a glance since... they got bones for a chest and an overall androgynous appearance. Damion is MCs roommate and acts as a shining beacon in the gloom to them.

Continuing with Carmilla! A charming and cheeky vampire girl who absolutely loves to gets praised as well as praising others to the moon and back. She's a worker at the “Human Body Shop” at which aforementioned Damion gets his bodily parts for his Frankenstein-like body and where MC earns money by working part-time. You can get to know Carmilla while you're on your shift and she is going to teach you her seduction magic too! I would honestly recommend everyone to try every route regardless of your sexuality as they do not go much into deep waters with the romantic interactions and because each of the characters got hilarious and funny lines up their sleeves you shouldn't miss out on!

-DLC-

Last but not least we're talking about Lawrence. He's a catbo- I mean, a werewolf! You get to know him in the Human Body Shop as well since he works for Mr:West (Shop-Owner) delivering the products every day. He's also going to jump at MC and bite her hands off for calling him cute and adorable all the time but once MC finally stops, he starts to warm up to her like a feral dog to its savior and is going to help MC with their studies for the impending exams as well!

Since I've already written quite a bit about the different characters I'm going to keep the following sections as short as possible. :)

-Art + Writing-

My favorite part about this game aren't the characters' designs but the excellent humor! It's modern and you'll definitely have to chuckle at least once at one of the jokes. The Art is decent to good but nothing out of the ordinary. They are working with a lot of flashy colors and a very 'big-eyed anime style' except for maybe Zero... so if you put MC and Zero next to teach other it feels like a staring contest between apple and almond.

The good part to it is the background art, it's very atmospheric and cute despite working with mostly dark colors! I also enjoyed the little 'scene CGs' which are made with a chibi art style also seen in some other western otomege like Sounds of Verity.

-Functionality-

It's a stat-raising otomege so naturally, you have some gameplay to do aside from reading the dialogue and deciding on the wisest choice. You are going to need to brew potions with a partner of your choice! Work Parttime to earn money to just buy your potions instead! And learning at least a few magic spells out of 28 possible spells. Or else you're going to game over. It's not a tough feat nor complicated to do though, quite fun actually.

Note: You will spend about 1h of your time per playthrough!
Note: My recommended play order is the order in which the characters are going to appear in the game (Zero, Damion, Carmilla and Lawrence)!

-Sound-

All characters generally only have a few lines which do not exceed a limit of 3 words at maximum at a time. i.e “I am alright”, “I know”, "Okay”, which is totally fine with me considering the fact that they had no funding for this game that I know of!

The OST's are at times repetitive but still very upbeat and fitting to the Halloween theme, think of a Kids Party Halloween Soundtrack Mix! :D

Note: You can change the BGM, effect volume and voice volume in the settings!

-Contra-

There is no CG Gallery available but the developers promised they are working on it! If you want ALL achievements and the possibility to romance Lawrence, you are bound to buying the DLC for ~4,99€

Thanks for reading!

Casual and Cute ♥

A kind of game where you'll end up saying "ok just another five minutes" which we all know will now be five minutes but maybe five hours.

Its a kind of "dark n'cute" visual novel game with an unsettling vibe to it as it surrounds around a mentally ill girl who sees things a bit differently than others would do and you will help her to go buy a bag of milk, or not depending on your choices.

2 Endings
Unique Artstyle
Atmospherical Audio
Playtime (~20)
4th Wall Break

Disclaimer: There is no save function , but its not really necessary either way due to the lenght of the game

I really enjoyed this short visual novel , its perfect to zone out for a few minutes and definetly worth the price :)

P.S try to press "A" while ingame , the screen will turn "weird" (?)
