If you'd shown LoA to the RPG player from 1993 the only thing he'd be shocked by would be screen resolution. If you played Might and Magic 3-5 you know exactly what to expect. Map that you traverse by warping from tile to tile and occasional rotating by 90 degrees, dungeons filled with chests and monsters, complex character creation, towns with quests to accept and services to purchase. Game does not overstays its welcome, it can be finished in ~25h and when fighting monsters far below your level you can just hold the attack button and everything drops dead momentarily. It doesn't mean LoA is easy, recklessness will bring you quick doom; tackle challenges carefully and be mindful of your party composition. If playtime per dollar spent ratio is important to you just buy it on sale.
