As someone who has close to 4k hours in the game, have 100+ hours (excluding Heavy and Spy) on each class and play competitive 6's, Prolander, and Highlander. Just stick with it. It may seem daunting to learn all the little nuances (what makes TF2 such a masterpiece), but once you learn, it is beyond rewarding. The feeling when you hit a crisp air shot with a rocket is the greatest feeling of accomplishment a game has, and will ever produce imo.

Be warned, unlike Overwatch and Paladins, this game does not hold your hand. You will die alot trust me; the combat in TF2 is incredibly fast, requiring mental split sec decisons, Positioning and playing the number and/or uber advantage is key. It takes time to learn to dodge rockets, pipes, stickies, what sniper sight Ines to peak, etc. Also the in game comp is absolute trash. If you want the ideal TF2 competitive experience--with class limits and weapon bans--do it on 3rd party sites (TF2 Center, RGL, Faceit), trust me.

To get better at the game:
1) Learn rocket jumping and doing jump maps, as well as surf maps.
2) Movement is the most important and defining characteristic of this game.
3) Learn each class' counter; playing as each class will teach you the limitations of all nine classes.
4)If you want to improve you deathmatch skills, MGE is/are community servers where you can 1v1 against other people and I highly recommend it.
5) Adjust some of the settings in advanced options (automatic fast switch, damage numbers, hit sounds, min view models). Once you get used to the game you can even make a config, adjusting the game to your ideal comfort.
