Been genuinely enjoying this, even with the occasional buggy model or car physics when I ram into something, but it's an impeccable game if you like singleplayer open-world RPG stuff. Baller soundtrack and I wanna get the DLC, I've heard nothing but praise from the people who have played it. Give it a shot, even at full price I think it's worth the money.

I really wish there was some sort of middle of the road recommendation option.

I really love Risk of Rain. I played a lot of ROR1 and ROR2, and was really excited for this when they announced Chef was returning. Boy howdy did the finger on the monkey paw curl in on that one. I've been thankfully mostly exempt from the issues I'm seeing in other reviews, but my friends who have played alongside me have had some fantastically strange issues that I frankly feel only a publishing company like Gearbox could create.

For starters, why is the physics tied to framerate? Does this in some way mean that friends with lower quality monitors or monitors that don't display at high FPS will experience different issues to someone else with different hardware? How in the hell does that happen? It's an issue that just straight up never had to be one.

I think the other added survivors are nice, but I hate what they did with Chef. He feels so... wrong. Jank doesn't adequately describe it. His main attack feels clunky and his sear just feels bad to use, even in combination with his special. I loved Chef in the original Risk of Rain, and mods I've played have done him better (shoutout to the modmakers that add so much content to this game <3).

Some positives though, are that I really like the levels added, the accompanying music, and I'll even say that on average, I like the playable False Son . Sure, he's a little clunky and his animations can be a bit strange but I like the melee characters and I just think he's pretty neat. Different playstyle that reminds me of Rex at its core.

There's more I could earnestly nitpick, but in all I really hope that Gearbox addresses these things. It shouldn't be up to modders or mod teams to fix issues that a massive publishing company created.

Final verdict? I suppose let this one cook, see if they fix their issues. I just really don't know about this one, fellas.

I really want to give this a positive review, but I don't think I can considering the decisions as of late from Sony. All the other comments can catch you up on what's happening, but from the perspective of someone who lives in a country that allows PSN accounts, this is still such a stupid decision from Sony. The Community Manager at Arrowhead was also not the best with placating the concerns, but overall? Until this gets overturned, I cannot recommend this game.

Update 5/6/24 12:00am
Sony reversed their decision it seems. Still weary, but so long as that hurdle is bounded over, I can more safely recommend this game. Be mindful of the publisher, but it’s a very fun cooperative experience not dissimilar from Deep Rock Galactic. Probably the best game of 2024, at least for now that is.

Do people who negatively review it because of the Warbonds not realize that you can collect the requisition slips in the lower tier missions? Nothing is truly permanently paywalled in terms of actual content, and the Warbonds are available forever. This is absurd. Play the side objectives, open the bunkers and interactables. The slips are there, and the Warbonds themselves give you supplementary slips too.

Recently saw some people get pissy about the idea of releasing part of the new update or something like that on PS5 and like.. you all know the devs here need money too, right? And the game is pretty polished IMO.

Anywho, I really like this game. Friend got me into arcade fighter games like this with planes and this scratches that secret itch I didn't know I had. Awesome game, I see it as def worth the money.

If you liked Risk of Rain 1, I feel that most would love this game. It feels exactly like a faithful remaster, adding both old and new content and making the game from 2013 feel polished and "finished" so to speak. Risk of Rain 1 walked so this game could sprint to the finish in record time. It scratches the "I love Risk of Rain 1 but wish there was just more content" itch so well, and I hope to see the same modding support that the second game had. Easy 10/10 for me.

I'm not sure what it is with the current state of games, but if I paid $70 for this game, I should be able to play it. It crashes some time between starting the game up and sitting in a lobby waiting for other players. This only seems to persist with the new season dropping, and I have tried every fix I can think of. I have verified the integrity of the game files at least six times and the same 38 files are always missing. I have reinstalled this game twice with absolutely no luck whatsoever. I like this game, even past the mess that is the active monetization systems in place, but for the love of all things holy, Activision. I can't recommend this game until I can continue playing it again.

Early Access Review
The only game where it's actually fun to get spliced by lasers.

10/10 would slice in half again.
