Early Access Review
CSD3 takes everything 1 did right and everything 2 did right and combines them into easily the best game in the series so far, plus a fair bit of great additions not present in prior games.

Amazing game with near infinite replay value, highly active developers, and a very friendly community. ToME is an excellent first roguelike to get introduced to the genre if you've only played roguelites before, such as Slay the Spire or the Binding of Isaac. I've played enough to get wins with 6 of the 35 total classes on insane, and I don't see myself getting tired of the game anytime soon. Each class is surprisingly diverse, and feels like a different experience.

This game does not deserve anywhere near as bad reviews as it's getting. Does it have connectivity issues and odd mouse controlls? Yes, but Capcom has stated that they are aware of both and are working on fixing them. The game at present is still very fun to play and I would highly recommend it.

This game is amazing. It is quite possibly the best rougelike game ever made, and boasts an excellent time as you learn how to beat the game one area at a time. Now, there are only four areas, plus an optional and somewhat secret fifth and some special levels, so you may be tempted to think that it will be easy to get each area down. It's not.
The allure of this game, is that every single time you die you know that it's 100% your fault, not because of a lack of balance or a bug (with extremely rare exception: maybe 1 in 100 runs that you lose will be due to a game design flaw, if that). And so the journey as you go from dying in the tutorial to doing speedruns and robbing shopkeepers as you go to hell is one of the best ones in gaming.
I will say though, do not buy this game if you dislike difficulty: there is no easy mode. In fact, there is not even any progress that will be saved from game to game besides purely aesthetic character skin changes. Everything is dependent on your skill.

I want to like this game, I really do, but it has the same problem for me as games like Rust do: it takes too much time, and there's no realistic way to prevent losing everything. You need to be constantly on to get anything done, and then when you're not on other players can kill you and take everything. Now of course, if you're not on a pvp server than that's not a problem, but the thing is non-pvp servers have buildings everywhere from players who quit and are boring.
The main problem I have with it though, are taming times; they're absolutely absurd! Some dinos can take 12 HOURS to tame, where you need to constantly maintain them and look after them: even if you play with friends, at that point it's more like a job than a game. The graphics are great, but the game is very poorly optimised so you need a pretty good rig to be able to see them. The variety of dinos is great, but it just takes too long and focuses too much on grinding.

If you dislike hard games then don't pick this game up, but if you have no aversion to difficult games then buy this game! It's one of the best rouge-like games ever, on the same level as Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac imo.

Like many of the other reviewers, I'm conflicted about whether I reccomend this game or not. At the start it's very fun and it's a great concept, but in the end there are a few glaring issues with the game:
  • The grind. It just takes too long to complete and is too competitive, there is a reason why if you look at the achievement stats only something like 1% of people have completed the game
  • The difficulty curve. It's more like a sine wave than a curve: there are four levels of difficulty you can enter dungeons of, and for every single one it's hard at first and easy at the end (with the exception of the fourth, which is probably too hard if anything considering how long it takes to get heroes able to have a shot at it).
  • The RNG. Now I have nothing against RNG dependant games, in fact the Binding of Isaac is one of my favorite games ever and it's quite RNG dependant, but in Darkest Dungeon something just feels off with the balancing of the RNG. It's too likely to get carried by RNG and it's also too likely to get totally wrecked without a chance; there's a lack of dungeon runs that are in the middle ground.

At the same time, there are also many postives about the game that can counteract the negatives:
    • A lot of effort was put into its design, specifically its theme and tone, and it shows. The game talks about a sense of dread and desire to give up due to being broken by the dungeon's horrors, and it makes you experience this too. (I will say though, that this is not solely positive: while it can make it feel more rewarding when you succeed, it can often be crushing)
    • It has excellent dev support, and is frequently updated. You can even often talk to the devs (or at least PR agents) if you go on the game's subreddit and comment on something or make a post.
    • Modding support. There are a lot of very big fans of this game, and they have made some very good mods.
    • It's very unique, and in a good way. It differentiates itself well from other games, and won't feel like a cookie cutter copy of a different game. It can be a great experience to be able to play Darkest Dungeon because of this.

All in all, I feel like this is what would be an excellent game that suffers from a few glaring flaws. While games like Dark Souls have a tone of being pushed to the point of giving up, Darkest Dungeon goes a bit too far with it and actually pushes players to give up. The early game is quite good though, and can easily net you 20 or so hours of fun before it gets too much and you have to put it down, so I do recommend this game, but with a caveat: realize that you will most likely not finish the game and that it is a bit too dependent on RNG.

I find Guild of Dungeoneering to be very fun, but I would strongly recommend watching a video of some gameplay before purchasing it; it's the kind of game that's hit or miss. The graphics are simple, but have a lot of personality in them in that they look hand drawn. The gameplay is simple, but can be very fun. Overall, it's a game where most design decisions are something that you'll either like or you won't, and neither disposition is particularly uncommon.
