What is the psychology behind cheating in video games?



The same psychology is at work as the “win at any cost mentality.” In this mode, any devious method to outsmart your opponent, even when you are playing against yourself, is all right. An individual who plays games with this attitude is engaging in self defeating behavior. Opponents aren’t likely to want a rematch and hard feelings may result.

Many of these individuals were raised in homes with no limits and the young person carries around an attitude of entitlement. They believe they deserve to win at any cost and have no consideration for the feelings of others.

Others may suffer from low self esteem as a result of a home with an abusive environment. Winning is tied up with how the person feels about himself. If he makes a mistake and loses a game it is equivalent to a mashed up ego which makes winning at any cost extremely important.
