I rarely write reviews. This game made me nostalgic and giddy like a little kid watching 200 zerglings disembowel 100 marines for the first time.

Remember back in the mid-late 90's, in the golden age of RTSs when we played the sh*t out of those classics like Brood War and AoEII? They always had a map editor feature, where you could set up your own bases and even whole campaigns.

This game is from-the-ground-up designed to do the very first thing we all did in those editors as kids: fill the screen up with armies and watch the bloodbath unfold. Only now, it doesn't make your 386 pentium desktop with stickers all over it run at 1 FPS until there's only 10 units left. It takes my current PC like ~500 hobbits trying to swarm and smother a ~30m tall ice yeti monster to get down to 2 FPS these days.

This game really scratches that itch of sandbox RTS free-wheeling, without being an empty sandbox map editor. Unless you want that too, in which case use the sandbox mode, which is 100% totally that.

The comedic aspect of the units' rudimentary physics engine and unintelligible noises while dying cannot be understated. And I do not mean rudimentary as a criticism. The units' behavior reminds me of machine learning programs trying to teach a model to walk within a physics engine, with no prior hints on what properly walking is. Imagine QWOP, or toddlers trying to carry a 2x4. They stagger, trip on bodies, accidentally maim their compatriots to hilarious results. This does not have a tangible effect on their ability to wage war on the opposing team, however, which is a testament to the developers' design and senses of humor.

After the laughing fits stop, and you stop spamming nothing but hobbits because of the hilarious noises they make, you learn the strategy is real. Tactical placement is everything. The workshop campaigns made by users push this ever further with some really tough scenarios.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the single greatest feature, reminding me of another long-lost childhood favorite, Urban Assault. You can jump into any of your units in real time and control it FPS-style! You've never lived until you've faced down a babbling swarm of cavemen first-person, armed with a cannon.

For the advancing player, my favorite army: nothing but cheerleaders and scarecrows. Yes, this game is that ridiculous.

Classic tactical, short games. Like a series of chess matches but you choose which pieces you want before the game starts. Extremely well-balanced in my opinion, especially given how fine-tuned the AI is to exploit the slightest misplacement of one fo your units. It's what it says on the tin, tactical, brutal, roguelike, some rpg elements, and just like FTL - a soothing electronic soundtrack.
