TL;DR: a 2/5 for very disappointing

Bright Memory was a beta for a game that just about seamlessly meshed fps and action game mechanics into a neat, albeit slightly janky package that was super fun to play and also really innovative. It was only about an hour of gameplay, but it was a proof of concept that I was 100% behind and eagerly awaited the full version of.

The combat focused on combined fps-style gunplay with action-style combat elements. This meant that the standard run-and-gun CoD gameplay was supported by an entire air combat system where you could pop up enemies with your melee weapon of choice and chain melee and gun attacks while in the air to suspend yourself and your target in a, again slightly janky, but extremely satisfying gameplay loop of movement to avoid your targets until you could close into and air combo them in one go, if you chain your attacks properly. This included a fully functioning scoring system that awarded your hard work with a sexy little number at the end of each fight.

This is the only thing I will mention from the beta because it was the only thing that really set this game apart from any other. Sure, it had pretty graphics, BM Infinite has pretty graphics too, but in the grand scheme of things this game's graphics aren't really that standout from any other game. What really made this game worth playing was the combat, which brings me to BM Infinite.

For some unknown reason, BM Infinite has chosen to take a significant step back from its action-style influence and become more of a pure shooter game with a melee weapon that you can still pop up with, but you can only suspend yourself with melee attacks, which completely ruins the fun of the air combat since now you can only suspend yourself for a fraction of the time that you could before.

This, coupled with the complete removal of the scoring system, a really lame upgrade system, poor level and enemy design, and a laughably thin plot that can't possibly have been professionally written (and told in the grand total of < 3 hours of gameplay), it comes off not as a bad followup to the previous beta, but rather as a game that has tried to become something entirely different for no reason.

EDIT: I originally forgot to mention to the stealth sections of the game as well. These, along with the thankfully brief driving sequence, are by far the worst parts of the game. The quality is severely lacking, and it seems more like an afterthought because "we have to have a car chase and a stealth section in this game to make it like a real action thriller".

It's blatantly obvious that the devs were shooting for the stars with this game, with the scope of the environments and the assumed gravity (heh) of the plot, it all screams triple-A wannabe, but it all falls apart immediately. Being greeted at the start of the game by a pathetic series of quicktime events that don't even tell you the correct inputs (it says "press" but you actually have to "hold" the buttons, if you just press you fail) does not inspire feelings of confidence, and the game never manages to earn back any of that lost confidence.

This game follows too closely to the BM beta to be considered a standalone game, but it diverges far too much from the original to be considered the final, definitive version as well. It is a slightly entertaining game, sure. While the weapons might sound and feel weak, they are snappy and reliable and get the job done. The CoD elements are all there and working just fine, but what the BM beta was selling was something much more, something that just isn't present in this final version of the game. In the end, it's very a disappointing final product. 2/5

This game brings out the worst in everyone that plays it. Only once all your sanity is gone do you truly become a positive and nice player to match with.

One off the best games I have ever played, and I don't even like Metroidvania games.

Got it on sale for just under 10 bucks. One of the best buys you can get. This game just keeps on giving with its buttery smooth gameplay and streamlined upgrading process so that there is little to no downtime between you picking upgrades and getting right back into the fight.

Easily one of the best arena fps games to release in the past few years. The whole game is drenched with influences from Halo, and the addition of portal mechanics add a welcome level of complexity to a solid foundation. It plays at about the speed that Halo does, and with about the same time to kill. Anyone that enjoyed running around in Halo servers will feel pretty well at home in this game.

The UI needs some work, same weapons need balance changes, but overall this game is well worth a try.

9/10
