Great game overall 7/10
Really satisfying and consistent combat loop
Not afraid to kick you in the ♥♥♥♥ , but will overall fairly do so
very interesting 2.5D Graphics with 3D models against beautifully painted backgrounds, works very well for the games art style.

Not much to complain about here. I feel the devs had a goal with this game and they achieved it.

If anything the map could be much clearer, looking at the map ,areas arnt sectioned off in any kind of way. Nothing beyond what rooms are connected to what is shown on the map which makes backtracking and remembering key locations somewhat difficult .

Is bulletHellVania a genre? because this pretty much fits the bill.
Surprisingly lengthy with alot of content and stuff to find ,
Enjoyable punchy+bouncy combat

The Anime girl fanservice is there but its tongue in cheek enough to not be too distracting.
You will be bombing random unsuspecting walls for items all game but key/strong items arent usually hidden that way

Really awesome franchise as a whole, both games are worth playing.
crazy fun combat that never stops satisfying
does a great job of challenging the player and making sure no features goes forgotten

Buy for awesome art ,story and an okay gameplay loop
-Cool idea, okay execution
-Cool aesthetic and theme rarely seen in metriodvanias
-Gameplay loop is okay ,tries to be varied but comes off as inconsistent

both the Parry and Slide are inconsistent, the parry is counter-intuitive and tends to lock both you and the enemy/boss in long animations, rendering it somewhat useless compared to sliding, sliding works in most situations cept when it doesnt. as magic cannot be parried or slid through, shields cannot be slid through, and some bosses can only be slid through during certain animations.
this overall inconsistency makes it hard to trust anything and makes for tedious trial and error .

overall the game as a whole is really enjoyable aside from little annoyances here and there in the gameplay

I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love this game. its got this arcade like survival tone thats really enjoyable
on normal difficulty towards the end things get very easy tho as you have alot of busted equipment and stuff.

however I have not tried higher difficulties so that might not be an easy on hard.

on a side note id love a classic zombie game that plays pretty much exactly like this, going town to town looting what you can and hightailing it outta there.

ESA is easily one of the best Metroidvania's ive stumbled apon.
tight gameplay.
beautiful simplistic yet unique art direction.
lovely memorable soundtrack.
atleast 20 hours of gameplay.

Pro- Badass combat that never gets old if youre spicing it up n gettin creative using the abilities and weapons

Con- vehicles are ironically pretty stiff and dont control very well in most of the games terrain

The good-
Lots of nice fixes and extra things over the original, very fun shooter , shooting feels impactful
awesome art direction

The bad

manueverablity ironically sucks,doesnt fix the fundemental issues with this game. It tries give you that classic doom feel but it falls short
- Player mobility is too slow , for a game ironically called strafe , what you do is mostly walking backwards trying to get away from enemies who Bline towards you because you cant STRAFE out of the way.

- Jumping and dodging attacks is limited due to the restrictive claustrophobic level design. some rooms run like a charm because theres more space for you to actually strafe and avoid fire, but most of the time its pretty tight and small.

its these issues for why I wouldnt recomend playing because as a Rogue-like game, if i cant trust the very thing you bet this game on being likable for then theres no point playing.

Words to dev: Go even deeper with the combat system and this game would be even more golden then it already is.

Indie of the year worthy. This whole game is an absolute masterpiece from head to toe
the aesthetic never gets tiring to look at, you really get immersed into this dead sickly yet beautiful kingdom that is Hollownest. and all for 15 bucks? its worthy of atleast 39.99

the combat system is clean and simple, alot of people compare it to dark souls but ive never played the series.

exploration is DEEP and seemingly never ending, my blind 100% run took me 50 hours. every upgrade , aquired item feels worth while . environments vary greatly from one another.

the story is very interesting , somewhat poorly paced due to the non-linear aspect of it being a really big metroidvania but its not too hard to keep on track with the plot.

my only complaints minor
No aesthetic upgrades -none of the upgrades in the game change the way hollow knight looks. not even the sword upgrades. a big part of the experience of a metroidvania is seeing how the protagonist has grown stronger then they were at the beginning, visually , hollow knight falls flat there.

Combo based combat system?- this is mostly my own preference but I think hollow knight couldve benefited from a combo based hack and slash system, similar to castle crashers/megaman zero/streets of rage etc etc.

The white palace - players who got the good ending will know what i mean when this game brings this sudden difficulty spiked Super Meat Boy/I Wanna Be The Guy platform hell tier level completely from left field. as rewording as it was to beat it , it was pretty ridiculous. I wouldve prefered just a really hard area with really hard enemies and the like.

there's alot more to this game then i thought at first.
really pretty game, easy on the eyes with its simplistic pixally style.

sound track is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing

gameplay is like if dark souls was rogue-like and combo heavy.

im not sure if thats a compliment but ITS GREAT.

there is a learning curve with combo linking since there's no combo meter or anything like that.
and its really easy to leave yourself open if you dont know which moves you can evade out of while performing.
