Played through the DLC twice - ng & ng+2, both on lv150 changing my build various times.

(8/10)

The Good

  1. The lore provides you the initial spark of what you experience in the end game, explained many unknowns in between, as well as its end. Was the strongest aspect of the DLC for me. Characters are deep, with twisting motivations and seemingly dynamic & dissonant decisions that make them even more enjoyable.

  2. New interesting weapons.

  3. Some bosses are great. Not necessarily in my all-time top5 (based on personal enjoyment) but somewhere in my top20. Definitely contains the best dragon fight of every game for me.

  4. Graphic design of some areas is magical, vertical structure is amazing.

  5. Big pot. Much crunch. Very gud!

  6. The world is twisting and inter-connected. You can access every but 2.5 areas without defeating a single boss.

The Bad

  1. Some bosses are unenjoyable. Not in the sense that too little work was put into them, but that they bank upon seemingly cheap mechanics too heavily: stupidly delayed attacks just to be followed by a extremely fast attacks that make physically no sense, false openings, seemingly undodgeable attacks often paired with extreme damage to increase the time for you to learn how to deal with them (some of them are actually undodgeable if you dont run the correct build), false animations just to mess with you and roll catch you, long attack chains, inconsistent attack chains, bosses running away from you constantly (Elden Beast ^ 10), blah, blah blah. There is a whole video on this on Youtube (with spoilers) "Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is Peak Artificial Difficulty"

  2. A lot of large empty areas, which synergizes badly with the fact that you are supposed to be exploring for scadu tree fragments. And, you know, it is an open world game, where exploring is on of its main features. This is made even worse by that fact that most items you find are useless for an end-game playthrough, since you can already buy them from the roundtable shop. There are plenty consumables I need, man, and it is not a Smithing Stone 2. Feels like you are getting punished for exploring the world they crafted. Further, there is an area at the end that feels really unfinished and bland, like we are suddenly back in ds2.

  3. For me, the scadu tree fragment system seems very cheap, lacking depth. I can think of a plethora of more interesting systems at the top of my head in 10 minutes, not 2 years.

  4. Very varying difficulty. Most bosses are more difficult than the main game, with long, complex combos, high damage and vast health bars. The areas in themselves however are mostly a joke. I barely dropped below 12/14 Crimsons Flasks, getting re-fills at every corner with simplistic encounters strewn in between plenty of graces. Doesn't matter if we are in a legacy dungeon or out in the open: Areas just lack any kind of lethality for me with a full melee-build, voiding them of any thrill. Only in the last area of the game they suddenly switched on the DARKSOULS button a few times, with a few devious situations & enemies. Played modded ds2 after finishing the DLC a second time just to make sure it wasn't me - it was night & day with me constantly weighing if I should turn around the next corner in hopes of a bonfire or just turn back and get a refill at my last one.

  5. Enemy variety is low in the DLC. Areas are filled with charcoal men instead. Few new enemies as well.

  6. (Weapons/AoW/Spells are hilariously unbalanced. From a 70 faith cotton ball rain that misses half of the time, to killing a host and his two summons with 3 AoW casts in a matter of 2 seconds. They will fix this with time)

  7. (Performance can be pretty bad on pc: from occasional freezes to constant stuttering requiring restart independent on quality settings. It seems to depend on the Easy Anti Cheat (Blue Bear), as when I turn it off and play offline, game runs smooth and wild. Hopefully they will fix this with time.)

Generally, the DLC feels disappointing for me, if I think about that this is all they could come up within two years, given that ER was their highest selling game of all time, more than doubling in sales count from DS3 with higher pricing. While the graphics and other superficial traits are top-notch, just like in games of other AAA companies, the fun eccentric ideas are more lacking (fortunately not yet on the level of other AAA companies), that make ds1 or even parts of ds2 enjoyable to this day. I hope that they pumped the income from ER into a new game, and that the DLC isn't actually the result of what they reaped from base ER.

My mistake was to put up high hopes from the astounding success of ER & the history of their previous DLCs.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 macht ganz viel Spaß.
