I'm writing this review, because this is a game I truly believe in. I used to play this a lot of a child, and now it is available on steam. This is definitely not for everyone but for RTS players I think this game has something to offer.

The game includes the game state of war, but also a level pack which is where the warmonger part come in. Together it should be around 25 hours of content, but quality is more important then quality so let's talk about that.

This is one of those games which basically have only gameplay to offer, story-wise it basically does not exist. The graphics are fine for such an old game. Everything else (like sound design etc.) is pretty unremarkable as well.

The gameplay is rather simple. Every level is a set map with permanent buildings placed on it. Buildings can only be captured and they always provide constant production of units/turrets/currencies. Economy in this game is basically controlling the buildings and this I think makes for interesting gameplay and a lot of strategies that are not trivial to think up, and execute.

PROS:
  • The gameplay deviates enough from the standard rts formula
  • The game has tough challanges to offer
  • Simple mechanics, but many possibilities
CONS:
  • The difficulty is fluctuating a lot
  • Sometimes there just isn't enough to do, game can get grindy
  • Simple mechanics apply to AI as well
Overall the game feels a bit all over the place. At best it feels like that everything is falling apart, getting attacked on 4 sides, and every moment reassigning the few tanks you have, while making sure no irreplaceable turret dies, and trying to flip a factory from long range. At worst you are replacing destroyed turrets for 20 minutes straight waiting for reinforcements.

The level design sometimes is just stupid and often times things are easily cheesable. Early on this feels like how clever are you, but later this will result in many retries observing enemy advancer unit pathing, and the game turning into a puzzle figuring out what cheeses to go for with the limited resources you have. However with its flaws I think this is a unique and fun RTS, and worth a try if the game grabbed your attention.
