Would definitely recommend to anyone who is a fan of frictionals previous games. SOMA follows their model of story telling really well, even if the scare factor is less so this time around. If you are looking for a horror game I don't think this will be for you, whilst it has some gory/unsettling moments it is more a thriller then a horror. But even so it has elements which will remind you of amnesia the dark descent as the atmosphere building is brilliant! Making you feel like a monster is about to start chase. Overall a solid purchase, would recommend!

I am genuinely shocked that I can’t recommend this game. Frictional are one of my favourite developers to date with rich story crafting and deep philosophical themes (SOMA) I even didn’t mind a machine for pigs because I knew it was another developers take on amnesia and it showed with its break away from traditional game play elements that players had come to expect with a frictional game, such as inventory management and sanity meter (Sans Penumbra)

Frictional second attempt at the amnesia series has fallen flat in my opinion which is truly a shame as you can see a lot of work has gone into it especially environments such as the other world and some of the monster design being genuinely unsettling. My major gripes would be the following.

1. New lantern/match system – Is genuinely awful I spent so much time trying to find torches with matches that I would actually miss some of the scripted scares. Added to which apparently oil lantern technology went backwards as over a hundred years passed because the current lantern burns through oil so quickly you may as well not even use it.

2. Poor sound design – I honestly hope the composer for this iteration isn’t the same as the last entry because if so it has taken a severe turn for the worse. With the original and even penumbra you were more scared of places where monsters wouldn’t even spawn just because the sound and environment design gave you the feeling of just around the corner could be something skulking about.

3.Immersion breaking – The main character speaks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much I found her voice grating from the get go not only does her inner dialogue (Or outer wtf you are being chased by creatures and you somehow thought having a spoken monologue makes sense – As opposed to Daniel who did speak but you could tell it was his internal thought process) Picture memories are dumb and take you out of the gameplay instead of relieving a memory and still be able to move (so you could continue to search shelves and the environment the devs thought it would be a great idea to make you stare at a photo whilst some canned dialogue plays. This carries to memory capsules which I have no idea why they had them voice acted (The original amnesia method of playing a otherworldly sound whilst you read the dialogue made more sense to me at least)

4. Family Ties – The connections between the games are very shallow and confuse me as to what the current state of the lore is. The other world wasn’t some desolate wasteland in which the shadow had been consuming, kind of pointless for alexander to be so eager to return after his exile. Another thing I found sorta amusing was the fact when you find the camp of the original expedition (Which would have been easily over a hundred years ago everything still looks brand new)

I could probably state a few more points but you can get the gist that the things that made the original amnesia great didn’t carry over to this title. I’d rate 5/10 if you could get it in a sale anything else I wouldn’t bother.
