It's some cool flavor for a region not covered as often in pop history. Devs did some good research with this one, exploring some aspects of medieval Iranian history that are fairly obscure.

Struggles are a cool game mechanic for simulating history and making you feel like you're one of many affecting history.

Overall, I'd say the DLC and accompanying free patch is great but not perfect - massive, thoughtful, fun content, especially for roleplayers, but some issues here and there. The scope of a lot of the content is not readily apparent from a superficial glance, and is under the hood or will only be encountered after either playing a lot or looking in the code directly. For context, I am speaking mainly from the PoV as a roleplayer who hates minmaxing.

The culture rework is ambitious and while wonky in a few places (such as debatable choices for some culture's traditions and ethoses) a good step in revolutionizing cultures to be more dynamic compared to previous GSG games. Ethoses are boring and might border on stereotypical/pop history, but traditions are where the new additions shine - for both roleplayers and minmaxers, there's a lot of stuff that's offered in finding interesting traditions to take advantage of. Languages are cool flavor as well, and reflect an aspect of history not often seen in strategy games.

Artifacts are perhaps the funnest part of the expansion to me. There's a lot of stuff that can happen to them behind the scenes, and they're more dynamic than their CK2 counterparts from both a gameplay perspective and how they're coded.

New events and decisions are also fun and nice for roleplay, and always welcome.

The big letdown for me is 3D courts which, while nice and definitely something the devs put a lot of time and love into, are underwhelming to me from a roleplay PoV - it's nice to see my characters, sure, but it feels like a side distraction that's disjointed from the game, and a glorified variation of the event window at times. Hopefully it will be improved on in the future.

TLDR: All in all, a solid 8/10 DLC giving CK3 much needed life especially as a roleplayer, that expands flavor and gameplay for all parts of the map in a well-integrated manner, though not without its issues. As to whether it's worth your money, I will hesitantly say yes, given how much content is offered, but I can absolutely understand if others see the price as too high.

Wasn't expecting a small cheap DLC to have this much content. There are a lot of new events and decisions, as well as cosmetic additions like new background artwork and UI tweaks, that really helps give the Scandinavians a unique feel. The DLC is probably not necessary if one isn't interested in playing Vikings, but even though I have no interest in the Viking fad, I can't deny that objectively this DLC adds a lot of bang for your buck in terms of flavor. I think it sets a very good precedent for what to expect for Flavor Packs; I look forward to seeing what flavor PI adds to other regions of the world in the future.

It reminds me of Elder Scrolls Oblivion the most, except instead of combat, the game revolves around walking and admiring pretty scenery.

Buggy and has balance and performance issues, which is to be expected of an Early Access title, but alongside Attila Total War it is probably the best Late Antiquity themed game out there on the market right now. Lots of fun despite the wonkiness and perfectly playable.
