This is the strangest review for me to write, because I truly love this game,

Immediately the first thing to address is why I would not recommend a game with an overwhelmingly positive reception. This article is not for attention and is simply my feelings on to me is a spoiled experience of what could've been one of the best indie games of the decade.

The plot is immediately captivating. The art is fantastic, with varying styles of pixel art and includes some awesome animated cutscenes. The music is sublime, reminding me of visual novels such as Phoenix Wright or Danganronpa. It's all got a great cohesiveness to it and is oozing charm. I can recognise a lot of the inspirations and the creators clearly have a love for games. The horror elements are done well. When the game is at it's best, it shares commonality with resident evil 8.

So. Why am I giving this review a not recommended?

I can't recommend this game because of the plethora of bugs and bad game design choices. These repeatedly broke my immersion.

Let's elaborate on these experiences. Firstly, on three separate occasions, I received a gamebreaking softlock or unexpected quit, forcing me to play gameplay and watch cutscenes already pre-experienced. This combined with the fact the game encourages you NOT to save, by having a limited save system caused those backtracks to be significant time commitments.

Next, some of the AI in the game is pretty shoddy. I've encountered an entire room of AI freeze up until i change areas. I've been detected unfairly and sometimes gotten away with behaviour that should have had me detected. This combined with a specific area of the game (the TV room) lead to an extremely unenjoyable experience that just made me wish I could press a button to get back to the plot. Furthermore, the boss fight at the end of this section punishes extremely hard for mistakes and again, the save is quite far away.

The balancing of where items were placed and how many of them seems very random and not player tested. I finished the game with a large number of unneeded items, while on the otherhand had to restart sections of the game deliberately because I had taken too much free damage. This sort of game design is severely immersion breaking because I turn my experience from in the mind of the character to remembering that it's just a game so I have to treat it like one.

As a developer myself, I recognise that these issues may not be the easiest to solve, but I think being released in 2019, it's fair to assume these issues could have been patched by now.

There are also some spoiler issues I won't get into in this review, but I will leave at: multiple endings should not exist just to exist. They should serve a greater purpose, either for comedy, world building, meaningful decision making and other such examples. Several endings felt like purposeless, often revealing little to no conclusion of the effects of the chosen ending.

People that play games come under a huge umbrella of categories. Many people will prefer losing oneself in a narrative experience while others may prefer enjoying the gameplay systems. Personally, I don't think I enjoyed much of the gameplay systems when I was not immersed, as they felt archaic and often withheld the progression of the plot.

To conclude, it's a great game that's true potential is held back. The game simply suffers from it's success. It builds such wonderful character personality, captivating plot and charming music and art, that when immersion is broken from flawed game design and bugs, it hits far harder than the typical experience. This game so deserves to be a 10/10 masterpiece, but isn't, which is why I can't yet recommend it. You'll probably have a good time, but I believe every player deserves more. Horror as a genre for me only works with a maintained deep immersion. When it's going well, this game provides some of the deepest immersion I've had, yet means the breakouts hit so much harder. Regardless of this review, you should probably play it yourself if you like story heavy games, horror games, or the resident evil franchise. Perhaps just play it if you don't get lost in films, games or TV. But to those like me, I can't in good faith recommend Yuppie Psycho.

Probably one of the best point and click games out there. Wholesome and fun with intuitive game design and slapping music. Story is heartwarming with great twists. A must buy if on sale!

Absolutely beautifuly styled game. Feels like playing a classic platformer when platformers were in their prime, fun exciting action. The visuals and attention to deal are just sublime with dialogue also being detailed and well writen. The plot is interesting and has me attached at every obstacle faced.

All in all, one of the best platformers you will ever play. 9 Years of development was clearly well worth it.
