Going Medieval looks like the 3D medieval Rimworld I've wanted for years. It's still in early access on Steam but there's a lot of potential here, especially since you can actually dig underground and build multiple floors. Gameplay-wise, this should be familiar to players of colony sim games like Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, and Oxygen Not Included. It's a story generator where colonists each have their own personalities and skills, develop relationships with each other, and work together to survive.

This game is the closest you can get to a procedurally-generated D&D simulator right now, and you can play with your friends with the game itself acting as the DM. Would lose my limbs again 10/10.

Valheim is a game about huge, procedurally generated worlds in the vein of Minecraft and Terraria but with the epicness of Norse mythology. Almost everything you do is an adventure. You could go into the forest for a simple mining run, but then you and your pals, laden with hard-earned resources, end up fighting a running battle with trolls and undead all the way back to base where you mount a desperate defense as a heavy fog and storm roll in. You survive, barely, and while your base is damaged, you manage to craft the troll hides you collected into some good armor.

That's the kind of storytelling that Valheim is good at, not of stories written by the developers necessarily, but stories you and your friends make for yourselves. It's great fun, and I managed to have a good time playing with random people through the official Discord.

At first glance it just looks like a low-poly Battlefield clone, but the mods are so extensive you can pretty much simulate any battle you want. Want Space Marines from the Warhammer 40K franchise fighting with weapons from Halo on a Star Destroyer with vehicles from World War II? Go right ahead!

Devs abandoned it

Edit: It's apparently not abandoned, but the devs were going through bankruptcy and are overhauling the game. I will change this review depending on the overhaul. Best of luck to them.

The developers call it a cozy management game about dying, but I think that's understatement. Throughout the game, you will probably form attachments with many of the spirits you meet. You will spend hours with them, befriending them, building homes for them, learning new skills from them... And then it's time to say goodbye. I think that's what the game is really about: Learning to say goodbye. Taking the time to say goodbye. It's not everyday a game makes me reflect on my life and the people in it, but this game did a great job. If you've ever experienced losing someone close to you, and you're still processing your grief, I hope this game can in some way help you go through what you're feeling.

Most fun I've had in co-op with friends and strangers since the Left 4 Dead games. Every mission feels like an adventure, no 2 maps ever feel copied and pasted, the banter between dwarves is witty and charming, and there's always some new upgrade, perk, or cosmetic to unlock, so there's always a sense of progression. This game does a good job of promoting teamwork, where the bulk of XP for leveling doesn't come from kills, but from completing the mission, and classes all have their place in a team.

I got it at launch. I had some technical issues, but that's mostly gone with the recent patches.

Horizon: Zero Dawn has a great story. This open world adventure of uncovering the mysteries of the past and uniting different factions to prevent an ancient evil really reminded me of that sense of wonder I first had playing the original Mass Effect trilogy. The game might also remind you of the Witcher 3 in the sense that you really need to change your combat strategy depending on what enemies you face, and planning is key on higher difficulties. It's clearly got inspirations from other games, but it does stand on its own, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
