Very unoptimized. The open world section is throttling the cpu of both i7 and i9 users;
If your hardware does not well surpass the recommended specs, do not buy yet.

TL;DR: The community aspect of PoE is dying.

-----

I am done with PoE and will not be returning for PoE2. One major reason for why I started playing PoE in the first place was the community. I loved hanging out in global chat and on the forums just talking and banting with other players. Even during the off-leagues I would still logg on just to talk with people.

The current state of the moderation is insane. The mods do not review reports and take everything sent at face value. This has led to griefing and mass reporting, to the point where the chat function is practically unuseable. If you were to appeal your report you will only get sent a copy of the ban itself with no further explanation as to what caused the ban.

I know this is not a dealbreaker for most players, and I will most likely get a ton of comments saying something along the lines of "Just don't use global chat", but it is a dealbreaker for me.

Fun 3-man co-op; if you've played Vermintide or Deep Rock Galactic you'll recognise the format. Plenty of upgrades, outfits, and perks to unlock, and many of the unlocks are shared between the different classes. The combat is very "meat and potatoes"; it doesn't inovate in terms of mechanics, but what it does it does well. As for the story, there is one but it can easily be ignored and it doesn't add or take away anything from the game in my opinion. All in all, it's a fun and solid experience, absolutely worth the retail price if you enjoy games such as the ones previously mentioned.

As a side note and a small negative, there is no voice- or text chat. The only way to communicate with your squad is through emotes and ping. I don't consider this to be a dealbreaker but it is worth mentioning.

EDIT 2024-04-05

The devs just dropped a huge update with a new map, controller support and a ton of qol fixes. I'm pleasantly surprised and hopeful that this will attract some new players to the game. If you're reading this and you haven't played AFF yet, give it a shot. It's a very fun multiplayer shooter in the style of star wars battlefront classic.

------

The value you'll get out of this sadly depends on which timezone you're living in. While the game does have a steady playerbase of loyal fans, they are only online from about 12 am - 5 am CET. You are able to play against the AI, but I don't see the appeal in it. Since the game focuses heavily on team-play and coordination you lose much of what makes the game special.

That being said, it is a bloody good game when you are able to get in to a lobby with other people. There's a wide array of customization which allow you and your teammates to build up varrying and effective strategies for both offence and defence. You'll also be fighting both on the ground as well as in space, competing for control over different points, attacking and defending bases and taking part in space battles not unlike those in SW: Battlefront 2 (2005). All this variation in gameplay, gametypes and maps gives you a different experience each time you hop in to a match. If not for the lack of players, this would be my go-to multiplayer shooter, hands down.

TL;DR. I love this game, but there isn't enough of a playerbase as it stands right now. If you do plan on picking it up, I'd advice you to look at the steam charts for the player peaks.

Let me premise this by saying that I enjoyed the time I spent with the game, despite the short gametime and abrupt ending. I was engrossed in its comfy atmosphere, likeable characters and well written dialog. I really want to give the writers some props on these points, because writing an intriguing story with relatable and believable characters is a hard enough thing to do, while also fitting it within a storyline that is roughly around 3 hours long is something else altogether.

That being said: It is a very short experience for the 20€ that was asked.

I managed to explore all of the ship, listen to all of the conversations, read every tidbit of information (both via the desktop terminals and hand held devices) and I finished just over the 4 hour mark.

And in the end, I just wanted more.

I wanted some closure.

I wanted something to make me feel like what I just played actually ment something.

I mostly want to know if that cat made it out ok ;_;

This game is a work of art, in the literal sense of the word.

The game is barely playable at this point. Constant lagg spikes, poor latency and network errors are plentiful, and even though the game itself is fun and has an amazing atmosphere the aforementioned issues keep me from enjoying what the game has to offer. Even if you are a fan of the 40k universe I would not recomend this in its current state.
