Early Access Review
Super fun game and all the updates they've done have added some nice new content. I love this game.

Bought it on a whime because I owned it on the 360 and enjoyed it back then. Gotta say, waaaaaaaaaaay more fun than on the xbox 360. Unlocked graphics settings and framerates? Yes please! Buttery smooth 120+fps and up to 4k resolution. Super glad i bought this game again.

Of my thousands of hours of gamplay on steam this is my first review I've taken the time to write.

Resident evil 7, I've waited a long time for this game, and was hoping for more. I beat the game at a casual pace in about 7 hours while attempting to collect as many extras as I could. I feel like that's a bit short, and adding a 2nd ending doesn't increase total game play much.

The entire time I was playing it I was wondering to myself, how does this tie into the franchise? Where's umbrella corp? T-virus? "insert letter"-virus? Anything relating to resident evil aside from a mutated family and goop monsters. Well that itch was scratched (somewhat) within the last hour of game play, which still felt somewhat rushed. Up to then I was playing through confused as to why any of the game was taking place other than, your wife has been gone for 3 years and you recently got a video telling you she's alive, so as a good husband you go to rescue her. The game was still a fun play through though.

They brought back storage crates for this just like in games before 4 with a limited backpack size. I don't mind this at all. It's mainly used to store extras and story items. I put some weapons in there and used them only once. I ended up playing through with a pistol and shotgun as my go to weapons.

The final boss fight was rather disappointing. They're usually long action filled fights but in this game it felt more like a cut scene. Gun shots don't make a difference, you just shoot to progress the "cut scene" and then you're given an uber weapon that drops the boss in 4 shots, that's it, boss done.

Overall it seems like they spent more time on graphics, audio/atmosphere, and vr for the game rather than lots of content and game play. They used a lot of cheap jump scare tactics to try and make it more "horror" but this seems catered toward vr players. Only a handful of times did they actually spook me with them. The atmospheric sounds weren't very scary, you could tell if they were gonna throw an enemy at you or not most of the time. So those sounds didn't add much "horror" effect in my experience (it's mainly just monster sounds and bumps and crashes in the walls and adjacent rooms.

The "upgrade" system/antique coin system isn't an upgrade system and barely a cash system. In the entire game you can purchase a magnum (I purchased it and never used it) , health increase, or reload speed increase for yourself, not the actual weapons (like in other games in the franchise).

Pros:
Beautiful graphics
Great atmosphere
Interesting character design (the family, not Mia or ethan)
Interesting "world" you play in although it's rather small
Entertaining game play
Some adrenaline pumping moments
Did I mention beautiful graphics?

Neutral:
Unnecessary weapons (boss fights need to be tougher to really utilize the magnum and grenade launcher)
Somewhat ties into the resident evil franchise because of bio-weapons
Enemies felt tougher than bosses (12 total deaths and only 2 from a boss)
Catered toward vr play in my opinion
Resources are scarce (ammo and health) since enemies don't have drops you must craft these items
Resources aren't so scarce once you realize psychostimulants show you where all the resources are that are tucked into nooks and crannies that you wouldn't normally check

Cons:
Short campaign
Small world (only about 5 different areas on the property)
Not enough back story for characters
Overall plot wasn't fleshed out enough (people just chase you screaming about family the whole game and the "why" is condensed and given to you toward the end of the game)

Tl;dr - I'm not condensing my review like they condensed the plot of the game. Purchased the game for $32, would not pay more than $40 for it. If you really want a challenge, play on mad house, normal was mostly easy but a few parts were semi-difficult.

Here's to hoping the dlc's will be a significant add on.

Overall I'd give it a 7.5/10 for enjoyment

Side note, pc has an i7 4790k and gtx 1070 and maintained a steady 90+fps with maxed settings and 1440p.
