Surprisingly relaxing game, giving its creepy artstyle. Puzzles are simple but engaging.

The plot in this game is immensely annoying. It pretends to discuss philosophical subjects, but it is only skin deep. It is on the level of having read Wikipedia entry for Turing test, chinese room argument and few other things, and then... stoping at that. The characters discuss what these things mean and we are supposed to be impressed. In reality how it is presented here is all banal, devoid of original thought and mostly pretentious. It also does not really have effect on the plot, which is about moral dillema (not very original one too) unrelated to those. If you want something few times more clever play The Talos Principle instead.

During the whole game we listen to discussions between the protagonist and AI. The protagonist is supposed to be highly trained expert, but she behaves like an idiot which must have explained everything by AI. AI has its own agenda but seems to be incapable of convincing anyone to do its biding. It insults people, then try to argue using "logic", then insults them again. Its behaviour has neither sense nor consistance and is quite irritating.

Maybe I would forgive it if puzzles were very good, but they aren't. Nearly all are quite straightforward. The game introduces new mechanics all the time and then does not do much interesting stuff with them. Not every logic game needs to have hard puzzles, but at least they should engage with the mechanics more

Very nice logical game. It is on the easier side, usually I prefer something harder, but here I didn't mind at all. The game is very relaxing and beautiful, and the plot also is quite wholesome. The puzzles while not demanding, were interesting and enjoylable all the way.

I bought this game for a single player tactical campaign and was severely disappointed. It has few problems witch amplify each other to such a degree it was a very unpleasant experience.

First, you cannot save during mission, nor can you undo your last move or turn. And the missions are long, 40+ minutes is the norm. You can make single mistake, your hero dies and you need to start from the beginning. This is unjustly harsh. Also, the default difficulty is... hard. This is strange to say the least and as you may guess it makes lack of saves worse.

Second, the computer AI is dumb as a brick which is balanced by throwing hordes of enemy units at you. Computer having advantage over player is standard in strategies, I know, but the difference is in good ones the AI is mission adjusted so you have specific challenges to overcome. Here I'm pretty sure only the composition of the horde changes which is not enough for the missions to not feel samey. You basically do not learn to play well but how to exploit AI stupidity, and because you are so outnumbered, if it starts to play reasonably or even untypically at any moment, you are often doomed. It happens from time to time, probably just by momentary random coincidence. So you fail and need to waste 40 minutes again.

Also, the hordes are scripted and what computer throws at you can be quite unexpected. The production is slow here, the units are slow too. Sometimes responding in time is just impossible. 40 minutes again, now knowing what will come.

Third, the game has few difficulty settings and it is a good thing! The bad thing is they just tweak the damage/defense/income numbers and do not address any of the real problems listed above. If you set it low enough you won't get frustrated, but you will get bored instead.

Octopath Traveler aims to offer the best of what old jRPGs have to offer and while it partly succeeds, it can be very frustrating at times. The pixel graphics and music are gorgeous, the battle system is elegant and engaging, but the plot and the grinding were very disappointing and severely limited my enjoyment of this game.

First, the grind. The lack of balance of gaining experience in this game is ridiculous. I finished the first chapters for all 8 characters and I was a few levels behind on all of them to start chapter 2 with no source of exp in sight. This is baffling. I don’t think there is a way to use all 8 characters without some horrible grind, you can manage with 4 probably and then just curry the rest in their chapters using your main 4, which discourages experimenting. Worse, you need separate exp to unlock job abilities, so using second jobs of the characters (which is one of the main features of the battle system) is limited in a similar way. There are 4 additional prestige jobs, but they are hidden behind bosses which have levels above the final chapters for your team. So, there is no content in this game to use them outside of the epilogue. The epilogue is at least 15 levels above the final chapters and there is no content in-between! It means ridiculous grind if you want to finish it, which you probably shouldn’t.

The plot was also not impressive. For jRPG it should be the core of the game, whereas here it is mostly bland. The worldbuilding is quite weak, it feels like the most generic fantasy world possible; everything is depicted in a quite shallow way. It’s not bad, but completely forgettable. Each character has their own separate story with 4 chapters. Each chapter starts with some introduction, dialogue and light gameplay and then ends with a dungeon and boss at the end. This is very limiting for the story presentation and makes most of what happens predictable. Sometimes the plot works, mostly when it tries to tell some smaller personal stories. But, it also does not help that during a given character’s chapters the rest of the team stops existing. Like, the plot often would not have sense if there was more than one person present. It is so bad that the NPCs do not recognise you have team members they know personally (even a family!) and treat you as a stranger.

The creators made another baffling decision and hid the final part of the story which links all substories together. Just look in the guide if you want to do it, otherwise no chance. And it’s not like it makes the story much better. It is bog standard fantasy fare, and it’s nice it links character stories, but it does not magically make the previous 50 h in which they had nothing to do with each other better.

A great gay romance VN with charming characters, believable dialogue and steamy love scenes. The game does not include any big drama (at least not in a good route), it is a lighthearted story with two guys who have a lot of chemistry between them. There is also, so to say, “tentacle erotica”, and it may be the best one I’ve seen yet, because in scenes where it plays a role characters behave like real people who think, talk and want to have some fun.

Great and climatic VN for 10-15 h but with a very dense plot and character interactions. A cross between a horror and detective story during showa era in the Honjo area of the Sumida ward. You truly see a passion which developer had for each and any of those elements. Entertaining characters, story and light but engaging gameplay elements. It is hard not to love it!
