Dead Estate is a feverish and slightly demented take on what you get if you mix up Resident Evil with Bindings of Isaac with a more cartoony flair. The main storyline is portioned out in bits and pieces and I really like the episodic nature of the unlocks. You start the game with only two characters, Jeff and Jules, but it won't take you long to unlock an entourage of intriguing characters with varied gameplay that gives the game longevity as well as variation. You roam around in an opulent mansion overrun with all manners of horrors while looting and shooting aplenty in roguelike fashion, all while exploring different floors and elevators to even stranger vistas.

After a mild adjustment to the verticality (jumping around) of the game I found it to be quite engaging. The gunplay is smooth and addictive and the artstyle and characters reminds me a lot of oldschool adventure games in the best possible way. And yes, to acknowledge the elephant in the room, there is a certain witchy character in the game with great assets (she runs a shop, elementary!). It is absolutely on the lewd side, but never overstays its welcome and are quickly lost in the genuinely sexy gameplay!

Final Update: Not only has this game aged like fine wine, it has also gotten a lot of love from the developers over the years, slowly releasing a ton of new content that really nailed its ending gracefully. This is a paragon of how a staggered early release should be handled, and if there ever will be a Dead Estate 2, my only wish is for Chunks as a playable character!

So yes, it is still great, and you should still get it!

Dredge is among my absolute favorite games of all time and the perfect example of how a good narrative can make the most mundane of tasks, like trawling for hideous blob monsters in an uncaring universe, exciting. The Iron Rig is a great addition to an already great game that brings more options to the early game while never really taking over the main storyline.

The focus of the expansion is the titular Iron Rig, a mighty oil rig placed into the rural backwaters in search of endless wealth locked away in the briny depths. Of course the uncaring greed of the corporate owners unleash a malady into the waters surrounding Greater Marrow and now it is up to our laconic fisherman, the downtrodden working class of the rig, as well as a rather peculiar scientist to stem the tide of darkness bubbling up from the ruptured seafloor.

The expansion brings a few new mechanics to the game as well as a new quest hub that expands the main storyline with a similarly foreboding presence in the shape of a black sludge polluting and transforming the local wildlife. By harvesting the sludge you can trade it in for advanced gear that brings another way of kitting out your dilapidated schooner with new advanced technology. You also gather additional resources to improve the rig and open up new areas with unique workshops and a black market to peddle your ill gotten gains.

The Iron Rig is another instant recommendation from me. This is the hallmark of a great expansion to an already great game, and if you like Dredge this is more of the same spooky eldritch horror blanketed in a cozy fishing simulator. It really works wonders in fleshing out the early game and brings the player more things to do while sailing the foreboding seas in search of the next lucrative catch.

If you have yet to start playing Dredge this expansion brings some new and exciting tools to flesh out the beginning, however, as a returning player you will find plenty to see and complete despite having an already impressive kit onboard.
