Buy this game. Play this game.

The first time you play, you're going to die. But the more you learn, the better you become at surviving. And it is so, so, so worth it.

Early Access -arvostelu
Great start to another amazing Subnautica game. It has a long way to go, but I'm confident the developers will bring it home.

If you're not the type of person who likes to help developers with bug reports and game ideas, I would highly suggest waiting until a stronger build comes out. You can sign up to the developer's newsletter and receive an email when the game is complete, or add it to your Steam wishlist and I'm sure Steam will give you updates on it's progress.

This game is going to be amazing!

Update 2021: And it is amazing. Seriously buy this game.

Buy this game. Best $20 I ever spent, and should be worth way more.

This game is an asbolute masterpiece. The amount of detail and thought put into this game, content-wise and gameplay-wise, just bleeds through that this game was a labour of love. I've been a fan of unknown worlds entertainment from their Natural Selection games, but I had no idea this game existed until recently. I bought it for myself for Christmas, and I haven't stopped playing it since. The fact that such a small team developed this game blows my mind. Half the AAA games from big developers don't measure up anywhere close to this game. The best way I can describe this game is this way: If you've ever bought an early access game, and had such high hopes and dreams for it, this game is all those dreams come true.

Even the basic concepts of this game are genius to me. It's an open world exploration survival crafting game, WITH a story line. That's a hard game concept to balance properly, yet they managed it brilliantly in a way I haven't seen any other game do. To progress through the story, you must explore the beautifully rich and expansive enviroment, learning everything about the new world you've just crash landed on. Through this exploration, you gather materials which you can use to craft gear, which you can use to explore this new world even further. Knowing nothing about this game going into it, I was so excited everytime I realized there was an entirely new and amazing aspect to the game. This happens over and over throughout the entire game, but I don't want to spoil anything. I think it's best you know as little as possible about what this game entails going into it, because it will constantly surprise you, in the best way possible.

I just finished the campaign (a second time? I don't remember playing it the first time.)

The game is very beautifully done, the animation, the artwork, the mechanics, the battles... all very positive. But there are some key choices the developer made which completely sapped the fun out of a normal campaign for me.

1: The time limit. You have 240 turns to win the campaign. You can continue playing after, but you won't win. Compared to Rome, I felt this time limit was way too short, and my entire time playing the campaign felt like I was rushing. This would be fine, if there was the option to change the turn limit or play without a constraint of time. But there isn't, not without modding. That is an option that should be in game.

2: Realm divide. After a certain point of prestige, your clan triggers Realm Divide, which increasingly makes EVERY other clan war you. I had one very good ally, and they warred me after about 4 turns. Everyone else was already at war with me. This mechanic made the last 80 or so turns of my campaign absolutely no fun, and made vassals absolutely redundant. 90% of my time was spent fixing sabotaged settlements, micromanaging every penny, driving off constant trade route raids and enemy raids, and watching every single general and agent of mine die repeatedly to the 200 enemy agents. This is a real issue with the game. I understand it's a challenge, but there is a line between challenge and painful torture. Seriously, I had about 15 provinces left to capture including tokyo, and the entire game just went stale for the 80 turns left it took me to win.

The biggest issue I had with realm divide though was the agent spam. Around tokyo I constantly had more than 20 enemy agents. I could not keep a single general or agent alive or build infrastructure, which completely removed any immersion I had in the game being invested in my "clan" or my generals, which was one of my favourite aspects of Rome Total War. Not to mention I couldn't benefit from any generals skills or traits, so I completely ditched generals altogether, and won without them.

Begrudgingly I will give this game a positive review, but I am not very satisfied.
