First colony - dead - wild boar attack
Second colony - dead - froze to death
Third colony - dead - FIRE FIRE FIRE
Fouth colony - dead - toxic fallout...starvation
Fifth colony - 15 dead so far, still going strong with my 3 remaining dudes!

I'd say it's a learning curve, which is partly true but sometimes the game just hates you.
