Beautifully crafted and vast kingdom to explore, great gameplay mechanics and some memorable characters too! My favourite game of the last 5 years or so.

FTL is a brilliant varied, easy to pick up roguelike.

You command a small space ship running away from the evil rebel fleet. Initially you try to survive through enough jumps to get back home to warn the empire, then you fight the rebel fleet itself. Rince'n'repeat.

What makes FTL click is the varied set of random encouters you come across every game. The encouters force you to adapt your plan depending on spoils of war you manage to grab on your way back home. Almost every game ends up being somehow different and you can further add variation by choosing a different ship altogether.

One game lasts maybe a bit more than an hour at maximum, which turns out to the be just right. Most games are enjoyable and satisfying without requiring you to commit to a daily grind or forcing you to sit down for hours to conclude a storyline that has run it's course already.

Gameplay wise FTL is slick. The UI works nicely, the hotkeys are well thought out and in general there's very little to complain. The visual style may look a bit dull at times, but it serves the actual gameplay with its clarity. The combat system may get slightly repetetive, but usually there's enough finesse and smaller variations that keep stuff fresh enough. Even at it's most repetetive, the short game span makes sure you still experience progress towards more interesting bits of the game. Once you start to feel comfortable with the base game, unlockables and achievements offer you more reasons to stray off from your routine solutions.

Overall, a highly enjoyable game that can be easily enjoyed even in smaller portions.
