We are in danger of becoming repetitive and tedious. But it's not our fault. Sony and the studios they work with force us, and rightly so, to triumph every time we try, play and finish one of their games.
Their attention to the script, the graphics, the direction, the sound, the effects, the world, the acting of the actors, the way the story unfolds and finally the quality of the final product in terms of each of their "own", exclusive games, some of which I had the pleasure of completing on PS5 and some like Spiderman on PC, rightfully place her in the upper echelon of game producers as each time she manages to live up to the high expectations that her creations have established for each of her upcoming titles.
So it was with Spiderman. The Remastered version for PC has been here since August 12 and it was pre-ordered, so I got the extras that came with it in short order.
Anything we say about this title is an understatement. The game's reception by the Steam community with rave reviews and the 33 million units of sales that the title has managed, as announced by its production studio, until May 2022 for the PS4 and PS5 versions only prove that we're dealing with something special. And of course it's no coincidence that it's been hailed as one of the top superhero games of all time.
Classic Spider-Man title then and of course we have all the elements that the audience has come to know and love from the movies of the series.
The protagonist and hero with the double secret life, Peter Parker, Aunt May, his eternal desire Mary Jane Watson, his childhood best friend Harry, Harry's father, Mr Osborne and of course many of the enemies he has faced from time to time, ready to play each one individually and all together, they and those who have added their part in the new adventure of the shy young man with supernatural abilities and powers.
So Spider-Man is here, almost 4 years after it premiered in September 2018 on PS4, through remastered versions for PS5 and PC and oh what an entrance it was.
The story takes place in New York City and after a short introductory video, we begin Peter's journey through the city map. Through a short but informative user guide to his first, we are led, or rather led (or rather both happen) to his encounter with the game's first villain. From there on, the fantastic world of the game opens up before us.
And what a world this is. An open world masterpiece, not huge in size, but not too small either, rendered with incredible detail and the new breath of life that the much more powerful hardware of today's computers, compared to PS4 always, now gives the title. The skyscrapers, the parks, the rooftops, the buildings in general, the bridges, the streets, the world, the cars, the traffic, the sea, everything that exists or moves in it, everything is just perfect. With ray tracing at full the final image just leaves you with your mouth hanging open. You have to see it to understand it, perhaps admiring from the top of the tallest skyscraper in New York City the city spread out before you.
All of this when combined with the studio's beautifully implemented way for Spider-Man to move, hanging from his webbing at high speed and the ability to climb every type of building or object in the world, makes you want to travel around the city just to gawk, improving his handling and discovering new tricks for jumping from one point to another.
Of course the characters and models don't go backwards either, especially those of the main heroes are amazing, but okay the world that moves around the city is not at Cyberpunk 2077 level in terms of detail, it's just as well rendered as it needs to be so that it doesn't spoil the game's image.
In general we have a New York City, given in all its splendor, through a living world, in which every moment something happens and every next moment something new is added, a dynamic environment worthy of the speed of the young superhero who is the protagonist.
The music, the sound effects are simply Marvel, i.e. simply "heroic". You can listen to the main theme for hours. The explosions, the glass breaking, the punches, the punches, the collisions, the crashes, the destruction, the villains, everything is flawless and accompanies what you watch on your screen in the best way possible.
The acting, the voice acting, couldn't be left behind, integrating us into the story and the dramatic way it unfolds. The main protagonists dominate in this area, but impressive work has been done on the minor characters as well.
Speaking of the story, we're dealing with a well-written script, one of Marvel's finest moments, that unfolds so beautifully and smoothly, without ever giving you the feeling that this was, say, rushed or overdrawn.
You're watching a movie, with twists, turns, thrills and a finale that leaves you guessing what's coming next, but actively participating in it while becoming one with what's going on. What made the biggest impression on me was the way they rolled out the carpet for the next step in the series. But let's not say any more, it's more interesting to see it all for yourself anyway and not spoil the experience for anyone who hasn't picked up the title.
In terms of character progression, we have the classic skill trees, new uniforms with additional abilities to use per mission and per situation, and tools that we can improve to use and make our lives easier. I found them all very inventive and I enjoyed using something different each time, as each and every one of them was really unique and always had something new, something impressive to offer.
How do you unlock the above? Through completing our missions, both the main story and the parallel non-mandatory stories, but mostly through exploring the city and helping the police forces as they fight against the city's villainous elements or the citizens of the city when requested to do so.
And here we come to the battle system. Excellent performance of all the hero's movements and skills, it enables but mostly challenges you to try to achieve impressive sets of consecutive hits that, combined with the movement speed, will make you try to get into fights rather than avoid them.
The game has content, it's not huge, but you have a lot of things to do, especially if you go after all the achievements and in the best possible way. What I liked the most was that everything opens up gradually rather than all at once so that you bite and get bored, each time a new set of challenges makes an appearance and it's up to you whether or not to engage with it. If you decide to do it, you always have something to gain that will help you significantly in the development of your hero.
In addition, some of the challenges have a really high degree of difficulty and require excellent use of skills and environment for anyone who wants to complete them as successfully as possible.
I confirm those who talk about a duration of about 37 to 40 hours if you deal with everything and upgrade all the skills but surely in these hours you don't have time to complete the challenges and all the items, uniforms or achievements that are available to you and of course there is always the option for New Game+.
As for the final villains, at the normal difficulty level I would describe them as easy, they are fun to fight with, but not something that will be difficult.
I finished all three DLCs, very enjoyable to play, nice stories, the first and the third stand out, with the last one being the best and having the highest difficulty level to finish some of the side missions with the best result in my opinion.
The Screwball missions have an element of difficulty for the Ultimate level, but they get repetitive and are definitely the least fun part of the game.
Amazing title, amazing experience, well done Sony and Insomniac, can't wait for the sequel. As a game I would give it 9/10, as an experience 10 out of 10 and worth buying even at the current price of 60 euros.
