Playing the early access version of the game, it is favourably comparable to a blend of Elite and Eve-Online with additional puzzle solving thrown in for good measure.

The game plays well and looks great. The universe is considerably smaller than the likes of Elite, but it has plenty to do in the regions of the universe you can visit. Combat is arcade style and abilities are derived mostly from your ship and what is fitted to it rather than level which allows for a degree of customisation to how you want to approach combat. Played with an X-Box controller, it is highly intuitive and flows well. Apart from exploring there is a mission system, Storyline missions, side missions and mercenary missions posted on job boards which keeps you occupied while upgrading your ship.

It's fun and entertaining, you can play for hours or just load it up for a quick mission. It's quick to load and get into, which makes it ideal for casual play.

Highly recommend the game filling a gap in the market. Though I still think X-Wing needs to be "remastered", a popular pastime with developers at the moment to rebadge their old stock at £50, I'm surprised it hasn't been done already.

Game suffers terrible memory problems and as the game has progressed slows down when selecting groups of troops. Making it both frustrating and doomed to failure, unable to issue any commands the game lumbers along at a reduced pace for around 3-5 minutes before normalising during which you cannot move the camera around the map or issue any commands. It's like being in a clown car as it slowly rolls off a cliff.
