Great game! There are some minor quality of life issues that'll probably be fixed in future patches, but I'm addicted to this game. The racing is very fun and satisfying. The car progression and upgrade system is extremely fair and really rewarding. You can play this game and be competitive without micro-transactions. The track system is very fun and including random user made maps on the map selection screen was a stroke of genius.

The livery publishing and update system can use some slight work. I have to share each slight change to my car as a whole new livery instead of just updating an older one. Please fix this in future patches.

Would recommend. 9/10 racing game

I am genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed this game. I did a blind playthrough and expected cryptic quests combined with antiquated gameplay. I was deeply mistaken.

With a couple exceptions, the quests are very intuitive. I only had to google when a quest required an item that wasn't explicitly explained. These items are usually tools you have access to from vendors or have come across previously.

Even if you have difficulty you can easily just go to the fallout wiki for anything you're confused about. The wiki is detailed and very helpful in clearing up any gameplay questions I had. It's also free of spoilers, and has very detailed quest walkthroughs.

However, if you're someone who is approaching this game after playing Fallout NV/3/4 the best advice I can give you is not be afraid to fail quests or do morally grey playthroughs. I came into the game as a huge fan of the modern Fallouts and tried to adapt my perfectionist approach to completing quests like I did in NV/3/4. I quickly found out that this was not how you're intended to play. In modern Fallouts you can easily figure out how to get the good ending since it's explicitly listed as optional in the quest objectives.

However in Fallout 1 there is no explicit path to get a good ending. You will approach a quest with good intentions and you will fail. It happens at least a couple times in a blind playthrough, and unlike in modern Fallouts if you try to reload a save to redo the quest you will either:

Realize you don't have a save that goes far back enough due to the limited save slots.

Realize that even if you did have a save you'd lose 30 minutes of progress/combat.

That's completely intentional, and in my opinion after playing the game it makes the game much more interesting. It immerses you in the choices that you make, and encourages you to reflect on how you approach quests.

It eventually pushed me to play something beyond a one-dimensional wasteland saint, and made me a morally grey mercenary. As I failed quests, had companions die, and made mistakes it served to give vibrancy to my character's story. I found myself in the middle of the game imagining interactions or plot lines like I would a D&D session.

That's what so special about this Fallout, it's a true RPG that draws heavily from the table-top role playing. It is so masterful in its execution that it subtly encourages you to create your own story.

Despite it's occasional antiquated clunkiness it is amazingly fun and a great beginner RPG.

I completely recommend it.

9/10

The game by itself is fun, however like a bunch of old games on steam it comes broken out of the box.

It took me about 20-30 minutes of scouring steam community pages trying to find a fix for the terrible performance and the out of sync audio. Eventually I stumbled on a community page that worked. (Turn off anti-aliasing!)

Though that didn't fix the occasional flickering texture I saw throughout the game, and it didn't stop some bugs near the end of the game.

In particular I encountered some cutscene bugs. One had no audio and the other one, the literal final cutscene, crashed my game. I ended up watching both on youtube.

If bugs and compatibility issues frustrate you turn away now. Try to find a more stable version of this game somewhere else. If you can't then the steam version is at the very least fixable.

Anyway I'll move on and talk about the game as a whole:

The game itself is good. Like all old games it has some rough edges. The stealth sections can be frustrating, especially if there's laser cannons near you. Those cannons force stealth gameplay by killing you instantly when if you get spotted. Though those are only seen a couple times, and there's plenty of areas where stealth is optional.

The combat is okay as well. It's very simple and doesn't have a lot of depth to it. However, the game does a lot of other things to make up for it. The racing sections, puzzles, stealth, picture system, and open world exploration to name a few. Most of which are surprisingly fun and well done for an old game.

One part of the game that I fell in love with was the animal picture system. In the game you can earn a lot of money if you take pictures of new species. The rarer the species the more money you get. This was a really cool way to keep the player engaged in the level and offered a really unique way to get in-game currency.

My biggest critique though was that this mechanic pretty much disappears for the last half of the game. I found when I was exploring there were little to no new species to photograph, and the mechanic suddenly becomes not nearly as important. Whether it was because of budget, technical limitations, etc. I regardless felt a little disappointed.

The story is lacking, but some of the characters personalities are vibrant and enjoyable which makes me forgive its flaws. Though there's no real personal development. Also, I don't want to spoil anything, but at the very least I'll tell you that the ending will probably make you scratch your head.

This game deserves a 7/10, but the amount of fun I had was an 8/10. Definitely didn't feel I wasted my time, and I'm happy to have played it. I doubt I'll play it again in the future though.
