What is an RPG "open world" game?? I had no clue...

I feel like you need to understand the place where I'm at in order to better understand me and the experience with this game so bear with me for a little bit. My last gaming experience was my PS2 prob in 2002-2003 in college, I remember playing Duke Nukem and the first Metal Gear solid. Then life happened. I was just too busy to give games time in my life. Then COVID happened. Due to having access to free games (bought the NVIDIA Shield and it came with some), I decided to start playing some. My very first experience was with Spec Ops The Line, and OMG did that leave an impression on me. When the credits rolled, I remember just sitting there, not moving, remote still in hand and my mind really REALLY F'd. What did I just play? What have games ascended to nowadays?... I have to tell you that if you call yourself a gamer and you haven't played Spec Ops The Line, then I don't even know what you're doing with your life. That game is not about the graphics or gameplay, it's about the last 5 minutes of the story and how that truly makes a twist in the protagonist story and makes you question EVERYTHING that happened on that game. Needless to say, do me a favor and go play that game. So I was hooked. I needed to explore this NEW world of gaming that I had stumbled across.

Enter Kingdom Come: Deliverance..

My father and I always enjoyed anything medieval (movies mostly) so anything with knight armors and a good open field of battle where limbs are being hacked, has my attention. I came across the KCD page on steam and well, had to have it. I started playing it and within the first 5-10 minutes I was filled with regret. I couldn't manage the controls, or rather I didn't know how to work them, I tried to fight some dude and got my ass kicked, I was given chores and had no idea what to do. Think about a toddler trying to tie their shoes without knowing how and no help. I thought it was not what I wanted. I wanted action, I wanted to fight, I wanted something easy. What is this thing I had gotten myself into? I couldn't get my money back cause it was way past the time to return it. Oh well, I guess I have no other choice but to give it some time and let the story develop and see if I'm going to stick around for more....was my thought.

Sooo glad I did.....

I tried to read a bit about it to see if it was indeed worth it to stick around. Then I read it was an RPG....What the heck is that?...google "what is an RPG?"....hmm interesting. Let's keep pushing through and give it more time, I already paid for it, I might as well get some of my money in playtime.

The tides turned....

I reached a point in the game where I was given a "tournament quest"... just enroll in the tourney and win it!!, easy right? nope. Kept getting my ass handed to me over and over. This took me to the Reddit page of the game where I asked for help about how to fight in this game. This is when EVERYTHING changed for me about this game. The short answer from the people there was to level up my character. Holy heck what a difference did that make. I went from peasant to superhero and was able to fight anyone anywhere. Don't expect to be good at anything in this game from the get go. You WILL suck at everything you try to do until you get Henry some experience in it.

This game is based on REALITY....

It's so real it's like you can become this guy and assimilate with the situations he encounters. We're not talking about a game where you're going to kill a dragon that throws fire at you, that might be fun, but you'll never do that in real life. In this game you will get hungry and you have to sleep, otherwise your eyes will close during an important quest. You can eat spoiled food and die from it. You'll go to jail if they catch you doing something wrong, when you're being jumped by a group, the camera will be all over just like it feels when a few people are using your head as a percussion drum. You'll be put in situations that test your morality and compassion. The fakest thing I found in the game was the "alchemy".

What a vast world this is..

Once I leveled up and understood the mechanics of the game, I truly enjoyed exploring the vastness of this world. In doing the side quests you learn to hunt, horse ride, improve strength, agility, speech, etc. etc. making your character Henry a super badass outdoor/knight dude. *Don't forget to train with Bernard as much as you can*. I also learned what a "world" is in "video game terms" and the world here is vast and rich. You really have to behave accordingly, i.e. not assault people in the street or steal something in plain view, but trust me, you do get the chance to choke people out, fight them and steal whatever you want, you just can't get caught. There are about 13 cities/locations on the map and they all have their own unique feeling with vendors/traders/armorers/tailors/cobblers that you have to interact and do commerce with. You have to build your wealth. For me, the easiest way was to start fighting enemies, steal their armor, fix it, and sell it around the towns. You also get to DRINK!!, get drunk one night or two and see where you wake up, you never know, you might be far away from home. Play some dice WHILE drunk! ,,, you can go to the taverns and play dice while drinking with the customers there and win all their money. There are caves and silver mines you get to explore and get lost in. The forest/woods area is HUGE. You will find all sorts of things there, you might be walking around and decide to shoot this one rabbit or full grown deer that just appeared next to you, you can skin it and get the hides or get the antlers or teeth, or the meat, you can sell all of this to make your wealth as well but consider that killing game is also considered against the law. But is another way of making your wealth. You will learn to brew your own potions and remedies that will help you in fights (give you more stamina and regenerate health faster). There are "bathhouses where you can pay for a wench and a "good time" any time you want, they can also heal your wounds when you need to heal so keep that in mind. You need to learn how to read, remember that as a blacksmith's son in 1403 you and a lot more people would be illiterate so you need to pick up and develop this skill as well, it will come in handy later on. As you do all these activities, your character keeps leveling up so when you encounter your next enemy, you'll have the upper hand. There are MANY side quests that truly immerse you into exploring all the little niches of the game, I highly suggest that you try an do them all.

All the locations and characters are real locations and people, well maybe not Henry, but the kings and story of the time is real. Google the cities and you'll find the rich history that this game is based on. Cities like Rattay, Talmberg, Ledetchko, Sasau, Uzhitz, etc... it's all there. Research about King Wenceslas and Sigismund of Hungary.

This game was my introduction to what an "open world" "RPG" game really is, and I can't be more happy with my decision to continue the game when I had my doubts about it. I finished this with 182 hours of game time and I know I left parts of the world unexplored. I really love this world, I love Henry and his journey, I love the time that this game is based on and I love the attention to detail that WarHorse put in developing this game.

To sum up, this game is DEF worth your time, def worth my 182 hours so far on it. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more hours exploring the DLC's and more of the world. But don't take my word for it, try it yourself..
2020
With the completion of Deus Ex: Human Revolution yesterday(1/1/2021), (I want to think I finished it in 2020), I have completed a total of 19 games since the summer sale and since I built my rig and started gaming again since I was in college and I had a PS1. It has been a very interesting thing to undertake once again in my life and challenge myself after many years absent. I'm quickly gaining my gaming skillz tho and I feel like it's just like muscle memory that you never lose. After college I went in the military and then took on bodybuilding, did that for about 14 years then I tore my bicep straight off the elbow joint and recoiled up into my arm while trying to move a counter inside a store as a favor. My arm was never the same. Then COVID hit and I was left with my passion for computers and that took me to gaming again. I'm loving it, having lots of fun and I'm in the process to updating my rig and use the parts from this one to build my 5 yr old her first computer. I'm teaching her the basics of gaming with old N64/gamecube games and a controller so that she understands the mechanics and goals of video games. I know that those skills translate very well in life as she grows up. The whole puzzle solving mentality is something I (as a critical thinker/free thinker) would like her to have and cultivate.
Anyways, that's my rant about the end of my first year of gaming once more. Yall have a great year.
