It's pretty alright
maybe wait for the dev to drop the next update and see if it's better then (whenever that is)

current update (non-beta) is pretty good
current beta is, while fun in MP, notably buggy and the mapgen kinda sucks

Particularly rough features and systems:

Psionics are nutty overpowered, and you do not get to have them. Recommend setting their AP cost to >1000 so they can't be used. If there were a way to consistently defend against them, it'd be fine. But, there isn't. (psionicpowers_gc.xml)

Morale values are incredibly punishing. If you don't enjoy watching Pvt. Signedup Forthis ditch his gun and move 12 spaces away, I recommend reducing the chance for Flee (and Berserk if the idea of someone losing their cool, turning 180° and doming his best friend sucks to you) to 0 or 10 (and bump up Panic to fill the gap). As it stands this system alone is a mission-ender, chain morale failures are 100% going to happen, no matter what (moraleconfig_gc.xml)

Reapers. Reapers. Go get Reaper Rebalance. Just...do it. Some things are not worth emulating and OG Chrysalids are 100% something to avoid making, even if they're nowhere near as tanky. Unfun mechanics top to bottom.

Heavily recommend grabbing "Jackal Armor Profit" from the workshop, because I'll be frank, it's insane to consider that no one wants to fund the organization keeping them safe for some reason. That your operating costs can eclipse income by a factor of 5 in short order, is nonsense.

To that effect, I also recommend snagging "More Alien Materials From Downed UFO" which makes shooting down UFOs that don't leave a crash-site actually give a usable quantity of materials, to supplement income from crashes, landing sites, and bases.

Otherwise, it's a good game, a shame it was abandoned so fast for the sequel once this was a "finished" product
Ironically it is also somewhat more fair than X-COM, as despite the aliens hitting like trucks while you're armed with a pool noodle cannon to start out with, aim percentages aren't lies and seeds aren't static (so far as I can tell)

Critical lack of understanding from the developers about what QOL is or should be, and that tedium does not make a game hard or fun, it makes it tedious or annoying. Also general lack of care with performance, to the point that the Ashlands biome is nearly unplayable in general, and the mountains bring moderately good GPUs to their knees with particle count alone.

Just needs some polish...and content...but enough that I can't recommend it right now

Don't give your money to Gearbox. They do not understand how to develop games. Hopoo hasn't had a proper hand in this in years, this is entirely on Gearbox.

Reign in the damn Alpha Damage and undo the sniper-meta; also ffs get some good maps. More mining collective style stuff. Less Frozen City style things

Pretty good, solid 7/10
Needs some refinement to the UI and races (please for the love of god put that direction arrow into every race, it's a life saver), and good lord does it need optimization (Sub 30FPS for a few races is unacceptable)

An excellent game currently being review bombed by man-children over a gamemode that is being put on the back burner NOT COMPLETELY CANCELED, so it can be worked on later, by a dev who is transparent and honest with the players. Anyone negative reviewing this for any conquest/singleplayer related reasons should be ashamed of themselves

Great game. Remove the anti-cheat known to brick hardware!
