I played the demo and found it to be a nice little distraction. It was definitely just as scary as Outlast, Alien Isolation, Penumbra, or Amnesia, and I've played them all. It was very linear though, and the main/only mechanic seemed to be 'don't run or you'll attract the monster'. Which was fine for the 30 minute duration of the demo, but I'm not sure how it would play for the full game.

Outstanding puzzle game, and this is coming from a non-puzzle game guy. Other puzzle games have frustrated me easily in the past by requiring me to pick out several objects camouflaged in the background, add them to my inventory, and then rub them against each other in the most unintuitive ritual possible in order to progress. This game has none of that. There are very clear indicators of progress, success, and failure for each mission that are simultaneously very clear and very natural. To cite one particularly gruesome example, on one mission my characters were holding hostages. The mental state of the hostages was very apparent by their stance. If they were relaxed, they would be sitting down on the ground flat on their butts, resting with their palms on the ground saying things like "Hey look, they're distracted". If they were scared they would curl up into a ball and rock themselves in a self-soothing manner while saying things like "I can't take it anymore, I need to get out of here..." The puzzle was to keep them somewhere in between the two extremes, since if they got to relaxed they would attempt to overthrow you, and if they were too scared they would make suicidal attempts to escape. There was never any point in the game where I said to myself "what do I do next?", "man I'm stuck, I can't figure this out", or "this is stupid, let me just look up a hint on the internet to progress the story." Overall, it is well worth the money, especially if you can get it on sale.

Bottom Line Up Front: The true spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, this game still has a lot of development work to go.

Pros:
1. The technology tree has a wide variety of units divided between air, land, sea, and space. Each one serves a distinct purpose and none of them feels like they are redundant.
2. The galactic war single player, despite the lack of a storyline, is quite compelling. Every turn I want to go to that next planet to see what upgrades my commander will get and what opponent I'll face next. As you progress the tech tree is expanded with each additional upgrade that you gather.
3. Planetary Annihilation has a very intuitive hotkey system.
4. There's a really cool rewind option you can use during single player. If you get to a point where there's nothing you can do to save yourself, you can rewind the game like a VHS tape back to the point where you think things started to go wrong and play from there.

Cons:
1. The multiplayer is consistently borderline as far as active players are concerned.
2. The save game feature does not work. I tried loading a game as an experiment and none of the units showed up, resulting in a draw for that match.
3. The game still freezes or crashes every two or three hours. If this happens during the Galactic War, your current progress will be erased and you will have to start a new Galactic War.

Outstanding game. I haven't seen a better adaptation of Ridley Scott's Alien series, and I've played quite a few. My only complain is that the story is a little long. Wierd complaint, I know, but I've heard other reviewers make the same comment and by the time that I finished the game I knew exactly what they meant. But it's still hands down a great game. I especially appreciated the additional content after the story mode was finished where I got to play as Dallas from the original movie as he tried to seal off the vent systems on the Nostromo. Two thumbs up!

System Shock 2 is an outstanding game that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout. Although the graphics are somewhat dated, especially compared to the latest generation of computer games, you can't help but be enveloped in the atmosphere of the Von Braun. Collectable audio recordings, disconcerting taunts from the multiple agents of the Many, and an outstanding soundtrack all work to immerse you in an unforgettable experience of dread. Few games have had as seminal an effect as this one has on the modern-day First-Person Shooter open-world Role Playing Games as this one has.
