Cobalt is a fun enough action platformer shooter, yet felt like a case of quantity over quality.

It starts out like a pleasant Metroidvania, where you're sent to explore a lost colony to find out what happened. It proceeds much like a Metroidvania, except that the journey is a purely linear one with no abilities to unlock to open new areas to explore.

The controls are a little odd. You have to hold Up or Down in order to aim, which stops your movement unless you're sliding down the hill. To melee you have to first hit X to switch to melee and then hit RT to attack, instead of X just being a dedicated melee button.

And then we come to the first boss fight, an exercise in going around a large room activating consoles while killing constantly respawning enemies. It's about as fun as it sounds, and it first introduces Cobalt's frenetic, chaotic combat, where you need to roll to deflect shots, shoot / hit incoming explosives to deflect them, and to pray. Success seems equal parts skill and luck as you're rolling and blasting and hoping you kill everything.

And after defeating the first boss, you get to do it all over again 5 more times, go through a similar set of maps to reach the same exact boss fight, just in a different room with different respawning enemies.

This is where the quantity over quality makes itself felt. Each of the 6 areas plays out exactly the same, with the same exact un-interesting boss fight at the end of each one. There's a plethora of weapons to collect, each with more stats than you'd find in an ARPG, but few are truly memorable. There are likewise armor upgrades, 5 items for 5 slots, that feature such dramatic differences as a 0.4 increase in damage reduction.

There are even animal enemies to summon or tame and ride, but they're all disposable.

And then there are bugs, from small things like how the Time Guardian never introduced himself and yet my character referred to him as such, to the game breaking bug after beating the 2nd boss fight. An item was supposed to spawn, but didn't, leaving me stuck and having to quit out and repeat the fight. I similarly got stuck in another area where I couldn't get out and couldn't progress until I brute forced a combination lock.

I really wanted to like this game, and be able to recommend it, but unfortunately I did not and cannot. For everything I liked, there was a flaw holding it back.

I loved the art style, and it made for beautiful scenes. Unfortunately, the character design clashed with the descriptions of the characters. The characters appeared 12, yet their actions and activities put them in their late teens, and the school teacher looked the same age as the students.

I loved the writing style. Unfortunately, there was also too much writing with too little purpose. There were long sections of text that failed to advance the plot, develop the characters, or provide interesting interactions, and instead seemed like prose for the sake of prose, meandiring off into the land of self-satisfaction while the story was left to languish. So while I liked the writing style, I was left feeling bored more often than not.

Life is Strange is why I love video games.

Playing it left me in emotional turmoil - thinking about what I'd done, justifying my decision, and hoping that I had done the right thing. It's one thing to become invested in characters, it's another to make one of them your own and to know that you're responsible for their fate.

Fans of TellTale's recent adventure games, or story games in general, should absolutely play Life is Strange.

The acting, both voice and visual, is largely fantastic. The game is often beautiful. The soundtrack is the most perfect fit I've experienced, and the first to strike me with how well it fits the game.

It has some flaws - such as the clunky mouse controls, some tedious sections, and the limitations inherent in a story game that responds to your choices - but they don't hold it back from being an amazing experience overall.

Life is Strange is one of the most powerful and enjoyable games I've played, and left a lasting emotional impact.

Cyberpunk asthetic, beautiful graphics, and intense gameplay make for a thrilling FPS.

Hard Reset sets out to let you slaughter tons of robots in a series of thrilling encounters throughout a gorgeous cyberpunk city, and it does so with style. From the main menu to the upgrade stations, everything carries the futuristic cyberpunk asthetic, which greatly enhances the atmosphere. The city and robot design are gorgeous, and with a great use of color, lighting, and effects.

You have two weapons to quickly switch between, and each weapon can morth into upto four different guns, such as an assault rifle, shotgun, grenade launcher, and rocket launcher. As you progress you can unlock additional modes for each gun and upgrades for each mode.

The battles are fast, furious, and intense. Circle strafe and keep moving, as standing still will get you killed. I found the normal difficulty perfect, challenging enough to make every fight intense, but I would only die maybe once per level. Additional checkpoints have been added since release to minimize repeating encounters upon death. The game is a good length, wrapping up before it becomes repetitive or outlives its welcome.

The main faults I found were the lack of a manual save - I shouldn't have to rely on checkpoints - and that the story was rather confusing and mostly told between levels.

This is a pretty good VN, and fantastic for a free offering, even if the name seems cribbed from a cheap porno.

It's strength is the writing and editing. Many VNs, especially free ones, tend to ramble on and on and could use some serious editing and pairing down. This one is concise and to the point, giving sufficient description and dialog without becoming tedious. The story starts out slow, but progressively gets more interesting. The writing is the hardest part of a VN to do well, and this one does so.

The art is for the most part pretty good, but suffers occasionally with some of the women. In particular, two of Diana's CGs make her appear manly, and Lisette always looks manly, which clashes with the description of both.

The music and sound effects are pretty good. The voice acting isn't bad, but isn't very good either, and I ended up turning them off pretty quickly. I would gladly trade the voice acting for better art.

I hate to be negative for a free game, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I commend the developers for making something cute, whimsical, and short. Unfortunately, I disliked that there was only one path, and every choice lead to either staying on the path or an instant bad ending. I didn't feel that the story really went anywhere, and it ended rather abruptly without feeling like a conclusion.

I loved the background art. Unfortunately, I found the jusxtaposition of beautiful character designs on posters and magazines in the background with the chibi style design of the actual character made me feel like I was missing out. I realize it's a stylistic choice, but the beauty of the background designs made the chibi design pale by comparison, and made me wish I was playing the games being advertised in the background instead.

I would love to see the developer make a game using the character designs on the background posters and magazines. They definitely show great artistic talent.

I think this game gives a good example of what it may be like to live with depression. It illustrates how limiting it can be by eliminating the obvious good options, since you know what you should be doing but are too depressed to actually do them.

It shows how positive actions lead to positive outcomes, how easy it is to slip further into depression, and even how unpredictable it can be to try to take positive actions but end up being more depressed as a result.

I found this to be a very emotional game, both sad and dark and uplifting and positive.
