Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 stands out in a time when live-service games often falter with poor launches, heavy monetization, and lackluster developer support. It feels like a breath of fresh air, but it also stumbles in areas that I believe many in the gaming community are overlooking, perhaps simply because it doesn’t fall into the same traps as other live-service titles.

At first glance, the combat system is functional, but it quickly feels uninspired. You find yourself moving from one execution to another just to stay in the fight. Sure, the executions are brutal and beautifully animated, but after a dozen or so times, they start to lose their charm. These slow-motion kill moves, while initially satisfying, disrupt the gameplay's flow, creating a loop of mini-cutscenes rather than a seamless combat experience.

The giant enemy hordes of bugs and aliens are a hallmark of the Warhammer universe, and while Space Marine 2 does bring them to the forefront, the encounters feel lackluster. The smaller enemies don’t offer much of a challenge and often act as background fodder while you focus on the larger, more threatening foes. There’s rarely a sense of being overwhelmed, which diminishes the excitement of fighting these massive Tyranid hordes.

Customization, while present, feels extremely limited. Choosing your armor is mainly a matter of picking your favorite color, with little room for real personalization. Class-specific armor restrictions limit creativity—why can’t a Bulwark wear a cape or a Heavy don a hood? It feels unnecessarily rigid, though this might be expanded with future updates.

Speaking of classes, there are simply too many for what the game offers. Six classes feels excessive, especially when the weapon variety is lacking. One class ends up with the majority of the primary weapons, while the others feel repetitive due to limited options. In truth, a smaller number of classes with more flexibility would have been a smarter choice, letting players pick perks and weapons to suit their playstyle without strict class boundaries. A system like Helldivers, where roles are more fluid, would have worked much better here.

The Story and Level Design: Functional but Forgettable The story is fine—it gets the job done, especially if you’re a Warhammer fan who can appreciate the lore. But for those less familiar with the 40K universe, it’s nothing groundbreaking.

Level design, particularly in the PvE mode “Operations,” is repetitive. Despite the differing skyboxes and aesthetic details, the maps themselves don’t offer much variety, which can make long play sessions feel monotonous.

Verdict: Is Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 a bad game? Not at all. There’s plenty to enjoy, especially if you’re a fan of co-op horde shooters or the Warhammer universe. However, when you compare it to other greats in the genre like Helldivers 2, Deep Rock Galactic, or Left 4 Dead, it falls a bit short.

That said, Space Marine 2’s greatest strength is its power fantasy. Tearing through hordes of Tyranids as a Space Marine is thrilling and, despite the repetitiveness, serves its purpose well. The game’s difficulty is well-balanced—you rarely feel overwhelmed, and with some teamwork and practice, almost any mission is achievable.

Overall, Space Marine 2 has the potential for improvement, but as it stands, it’s an enjoyable, if somewhat flawed, addition to the co-op shooter genre.
