ONCE HUMAN is a post-apocalyptic survival game set in a world overrun by cosmic horrors. The game blends elements of base-building, resource management, and intense combat with a dark and eerie atmosphere that keeps you on your toes. While the game shows potential, particularly in its world design and environmental storytelling, it’s held back by several significant issues that may deter players from fully immersing themselves in its bleak universe.

Pros:

Atmosphere and World-Building:
The game excels in creating a haunting atmosphere, with desolate landscapes, abandoned structures, and terrifying creatures that truly convey the despair of a post-apocalyptic world. The attention to detail in the environment is commendable, and the lore scattered throughout the game is intriguing enough to keep you invested.

Base-Building Mechanics:
ONCE HUMAN offers a robust base-building system that allows players to construct and customize their safe havens. The variety of materials and blueprints available provides a lot of freedom in designing your base, which becomes a crucial element in surviving the increasingly difficult threats that the game throws at you.

Combat and Enemy Design:
Combat in ONCE HUMAN is a mix of tense gunplay and strategic resource management. The enemies are well-designed, each type requiring different approaches to defeat, which adds a layer of strategy to encounters. The boss fights, in particular, are standout moments, challenging and rewarding in equal measure.

Cons:

Technical Issues:
Unfortunately, ONCE HUMAN suffers from a host of technical problems that significantly hinder the experience. Bugs, performance issues, and occasional crashes are common, which can be frustrating, especially during intense moments. While the developers are active in addressing these issues, they currently detract from the overall experience.

Unpolished Mechanics:
Some gameplay mechanics, such as the crafting system and inventory management, feel clunky and unintuitive. These systems could use more refinement to make them smoother and more enjoyable. Additionally, the UI is sometimes cumbersome, making certain actions more tedious than they should be.

Pacing and Balance:
The game's difficulty curve can be inconsistent, with some sections feeling unfairly challenging, while others are surprisingly easy. This imbalance can lead to frustration, especially for players who prefer a more even progression. The resource grind can also feel excessive at times, leading to periods of repetitive gameplay.

Conclusion:
ONCE HUMAN has the makings of a great survival game with its atmospheric world, solid base-building mechanics, and intense combat encounters. However, it’s currently held back by technical issues, unpolished mechanics, and pacing problems. If you’re a fan of the genre and are willing to overlook these flaws, there’s a lot to enjoy here. However, for those who prefer a more polished experience, it might be worth waiting for a few updates before diving in.
