Transistor is the foundation for a great game, but sadly it is not given enough time to fully develop itself. The game's story seems unfinished, having 2 of the 4 characters that are hyped up as the mad bad guys kill themselves shortly before you meet them in a very anticlimactic scene. And the game is short. Very short. Around 2 hours short. The saddest part about all of this is that everything else about the game is great. the art and music both compliment each other very well, and the game features one of the most unique combat systems i've ever seen. In case you havent played the game, it works like this: You unlock "functions" as you progress in the game, functions can be equipped in your hotbar as attacks, one shoots a piercing lazer beam, another is a powerful AOE melee hit, etc. Now this is where it gets interesting, each function you equip as an attack can have 2 upgrades, but what do you use to upgrade them? Other functions of course! Each function has unique properties as both an attack and an upgrade, remember that piercing lazer beam? If you add that as an upgrade, it adds piercing to whatever you stick it on. The AOE melee attack? That one adds knockback to any attack. There are around 20 functions total so you can see how many combinations are possible in this system. And after all that, you still have one trick up your sleeve. Turn(), the most powerful function in your possesion. Turn() is always equipped unlike the other functions, so its seperate from the whole combination system. Turn() allows you to stop time and plan out a series of attacks that all execute in a blink of an eye, but after using it all of your other functions are disabled while it recharges, so you have to watch. I dont know what happened during the development of this game, but it is such a shame that this incredible combat system went to waste. However i still recommend playing it even if the story is a boring, confusing mess. The combat and art are enough to warrant a try.

Rain World is a beautiful game that puts every other survival game to shame. the sprites look so good that I often questioned if they were even sprites at all, and the sound design is subtle yet amazing. The sound design in one part of the ending (if you've beaten it you know what i'm talking about) literally took my breath away and made me pause the game to think about it. The game holds your hand very little, only telling you the basic movement and a general direction to go in, which can be frustrating at first as you die to seemingly unavoidable threats, but as you learn the game better you figure out how to avoid these threats yourself, which is a much better experience than being told by some tutorial. Rain World requires a lot of patience, as you will be dying a lot in the early stages, but it is very worth it for one of the best survival experiences ever.

Crosscode simulates the interpersonal experience of playing a classic MMORPG without needing an internet connection at all, as well as having one of the most fun and fast paced ARPG combat systems in recent times. crosscode is somewhat of a jack of all trades, having great story, and combat. so lets talk about those.

STORY
Crosscode takes place in a very interesting setting, in the future where VR technology is so advanced that its practically the same as being inside the game, you are a player of a popular VR MMORPG: crossworlds. Because of this setting, crosscode is able to take a very interesting approach to storytelling. all of the characters in crosscode are people who are playing crossworlds alongside of you. characters comment on the in game story of crossworlds as any player of video games does, and many characters are veteran players that are max level when you start playing. what im trying to say is: the story of crosscode is much more personal, not only is it very easy to relate to the characters because of how they are playing a game just like you are, but also the story is almost completely character focused.

COMBAT
the combat of crosscode shows its depth right from the start during the tutorial. you have 4 main moves: a melee swipe that does a spinning AOE combo after 3 hits, a ranged ball attack that i'll cover more later, a dash with I frames, and a block that can be timed to execute a parry. one of the most interesting systems here is the ranged attack. the ranged attack can be fired quickly or charged up to shoot a more powerful, bouncing attack that can be used for solving puzzles. the accuracy of your shots is displayed by a cone that shows up origionating from your character, as you might expect the rapid shots are very inaccurate while the charged ones are very accurate. but if you charge up a shot your accuracy cone stays locked at the high accurace mode, so you can spam fast attacks with the accuracy of a charged shot. later in the game you unlock elemental damage types, each of which has different attack styles and enemies that they are effective aginst.

Overall crosscode perfectly mixes the 2 main aspect of games into a final product that is an enjoyable experience the whole way through.
