My mate gifted me this for christmas so we could play together. I spent 2 hours playing the campaign in order to unlock co-op to play with my homie only to find out that you can't play the campaign in co-op unlike later games

If I own the game I should be able to do what I want. Why is there an arbitrary limit imposed on multiplayer when you can't even play the campaign together?
