EDIT: this review has been changed to a negative review because of the PSN account requirement changes and Sony's locking out of 170+ countries from accessing the game they paid for.

The review below is true for the game as it is without the PSN account requirement.

I hope that whichever Sony executive was responsible for the changes to the PSN account requirement changes their mind. Failing that, that they change their job and gets promoted to customer.

It's fun.

That's... that's really what it comes down to, with a game review. Readers want to know, is it fun or not? Worth playing or not?

Yes.

The long answer is that the gunplay is flashy and meaty but each gun has a distinct feel to it; aside from the obvious rate of fire, damage dealt and magazine size, your weapon sway is linked to the 'ergonomics' of a gun, so a pistol or SMG snaps around nearly instanty while trying to move and shoot an autocannon feels more like reigning in a horse until you take a knee and steady yourself. Rather than damage numbers, your damage feedback is seeing your enemies get ripped apart in sprays of green blood and red oil (and so do you, with different debuffs for getting your legs or arms wounded, or a sucking chest wound that slowly saps your health until you stick a stim into the problem).

In short, the gunplay is viscerally rewarding, even if there are clear winners among the guns, Arrowhead has a lot on their plate and I am happy to sit with my current pool of 'go to' weapons as they balance things out.

The stratagem system is about calling down help from your orbital assets and CAS aircraft, but rather than 'push button, get bombs' you have to dial in the right code, which adds a level of pressure to either commit the sequence of arrow key inputs to memory and to get them right when reading it off the command list on your screen, which can be a challenge when you're being swarmed by bugs or bots. Such a simple bit of friction adds so much tension and exciement - especially when your whole team is relying on you to get that calldown.

Its a simple but effective way to ramp up the difficulty of getting your stratagems into play.

There are - as of writing this review - three battle passes, which are all grindable without any money being spent in addition to the initial purchase price of the game. You buy the premium 'warbonds' with super credits, which are an uncommon but not rare drop in points of interest scattered around the map. A little out of the way but not a huge detour from main objectives. Once you have unlocked a warbond you progress it with medals, which you get 3-15 of from completing a mission and can also find 'in the field' as a point of interest drop like super credits.

And best of all, there's no FOMO as warbonds are permanent and so far have not been planned to be closed down.

Big thumbs up to Arrowhead.

A faithful and fun adaptation of the Verhoeven Starship Troopers movies with solid writing and gameplay mechanics.

Inscryption is the Billy Mays of CCG Roguelikes.

Literally the whole game could be summed up as 'BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE'!

Just goes to show how far ahead of the game they were with Titanfall 2; Respawn released a 2016 game in 2020 and it utterly slays.

Hell, it's about time.

Gameplay is great, custom maps and music, mod support just adds to that.

Definitely an essential for any owners of VR.

Early Access Review
Lovely game, great atmosphere, but very early access; devs are very active on the discord, getting feedback and are going to release a roadmap soon.

Definitely a title I don't mind sitting on until we see more from PLG. Looking forward to seeing more from them

The soundtrack alone is worth the ~$30 I paid for this game and the OST.

Yes. I actually went and got the OST instead of pirating it.

Only played an hour so far (with my brother, which basically sent us 20 years back to when we were first playing games together on the PSOne).

Loved every second of losing to the mooks in the first level.
