Let's just say that this game is more addictive than crack. Though cheaper! But I bought this game on friday, played it for six hours that day. The next day, I stayed up till 4 AM just playing this game.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turnbased strategy game by the makers of Civilization series, a reboot of the original UFO-series of games. You are the commander of a special, secret foundation called XCOM, that has to defend Earth from an alien invasion. The aliens wield superior tech, and it's your job to even the playing field. Kill aliens, capture them alive to steal their technology. Engage in dogfights with flying saucers. Reverse-engineer weapons. Discover new alien species (and kill them!) Decimate the adversary.

I had no earlier experience of them, but this game caught me completely off-guard. I played the demo and got interested. Bought it, and WHAM! Hooked! The game is unforgiving, but deeply satisfying, when your team of hardened badass veterans wipe out the aliens without taking a single hit. Those Mutons never knew what hit them, when my Archangel armor wearing Plasma Sniper took out every single one of them in one turn, after a rocket had demolished their cover. Or how about that time, when a group of thin men were hiding behind a car, and a heavy took them all out with a well placed rocket, that took out the car and everything next to it? Or when your assault runs to the last enemy to give them a faceful of buckshot, in the face, IN SLOW MOTION? This game has it all.

The difficulty can be sometimes exruciating, especially when that hardened badass group gets ambushed by aliens, and picked off one by one? Forgot to reload your weapon? Well, in the next turn that alien is going to eat your face. And let's not get started with the harder difficulties. Or even better, IRONMAN mode. Ironman mode disables your game saving, and instead maintains one single save, that is updated after every move. Your team of colonels got slaughtered in a tough mission, with no survivors? Enjoy throwing dozens of rookies after the aliens in the following missions, because those guys are dead, and nothing can save them. I've myself played only the normal mode (second time, got utterly decimated on the first, because I wasn't prepared at all!) It can even then be hard as hell at times. I must confess to have resorted to "save scumming" to save my soldiers. For example, one time I rushed straight into a landed UFO from the front door, and got swarmed. A whole team of colonels and majors dead withing a few turns. I reloaded, and started from the side of the ship this time. Now, everybody survived. With Ironman mode, prepare to die. Seriously.

If you like turnbased strategies, or strategies in general, buy this game! It is absolutely hooking and torturous especially on the higher levels. You will fear, you will die, you will experience the greatest of feelings when you massacre an alien group without them ever getting a shot at you. Buy. This. Game.

[PS. If you can, get Enemy Within as well. I haven't played it yet, but plan on getting it. It might be a little overwhelming for a new player, as it adds a ton of more missions and content]
