I played many platformer/metrovania games before and I honestly didn't enjoy the game "Owlboy" for many reasons.
I was really disappointed by the game after reading so many good reviews.

This will mainly be a list of pros and cons based on my personal opinions about the game but I will try to explain some of them.

Pros
- amazingly beautiful pixel art
- nice soundtrack
- story was quite nice

Cons
- controls are mediocre
- gameplay feels lackluster¹
- collectibles feel like non-existent²
- nice gameplay elements or sections are usually only used once in the whole game
- more annoying enemies than actually well designed ones (gameplaywise)³
- some animations are really annoying and disturbing

1: You can have multiple friends that you can carry around, drop them somewhere, pick them up again and use their weapons. Those friends can be called and send away with some kind of ancient teleport device. You can imagine the many possibilities this could be used for. In reality you just use them like one time each when they join your team, the rest of the game they are just used as your weapon or to clear paths that you cannot take otherwise. The most part of the game they feel useless.

2: I like achievements and collectibles etc very much and I was sad to see that there were no collectible at all except normal coins (which there are a limited number of) and 3 big coins. With coins you can buy up to 8 items. Five of them are stat upgrades the rest are cosmetics. These cosmetics are temporary and lost the next time you take damage. After collecting everything you get one item that increases your utility...

3: I don't care about hard games having frustrating enemies but I feel in this game they are completely unnecessary since you have no real disadvantage of dying. (You just get set back to the beginning of the room) My point here is that having actually well designed enemies would be much more profitable to the game than ones that chase you through multiple screens even though there is nothing to get from them anymore.

All in all the game felt really nice in the beginning but went downhill in the middle. At some point the awesome art style couldn't really compensate the unsatisfying gameplay. I don't think good art style is necessary if the gameplay is good but this game just felt like it tries to justify underwhelming gameplay with a really amazing art style.

Remember this is just my honest opinion about the game so you may like it but I didn't and I still don't think this game is worth ~20 bucks.

Unique gameplay with awesome soundtracks. It is quite difficult at the beginning but the better you get the more enjoyable it is!!
