Thank you to the dear friend who gave me this game. Calling this game "A Detective is Born" does not do it justice.

For those who grew up loving LucasArts and those who enjoy the games of WadjetEye, this is a no brainer. I marvel at how refined pixel games are starting to look. When the game goes for pretty....it's really nice. When it wants to be creepy...it is possibly the most disturbing thing I have every seen...and I thought The Last Door was creepy. The game plays as a standard point and click, with easy controls. The soundtrack is very fitting to the game.

Kathy is a strong, irreverant, foul-mouthed, bitter young 20 something year old, and I love her to death. I have seen other anti-heroes who have bad attitutes for the sake of the game, and I HATE that; but Kathy has good reason for being the way she is. Life has happened to her, and it hasn't always been kind. In fact it never really has. Kathy feels like a real person, thanks to the incredible vocal performance. She can be funny, tough as nails, and genuinely concerned. She grows TREMENDOUSLY through the game. I don't want to tell how because of major story spoilers. She is just a well written character who, along with how great the game looks, make this game work.

Kathy is surrounded by some great side characters who give good performances. All round, I really liked the voice acting and the script. Apart from the sci-fi/religion conspiracy gamey plot, the personal relationships between the people of this game felt very genuine. The family drama in this game had me in tears, since it can be extremely relatable.

This is no point and click for the kiddos, or even the teens for that matter. This game deals in some very serious subject matter: teen suicide, teen abortion, abandonment, and being ostracized from loving familly members. The consequences of these choices are fleshed out, and at times it was hard to sit through. The language is extremely colorful. Kathy has got a mouth on her (lot of f-bombs), but what bothered me was the c**t bomb. That I felt was the writers wanting to be edgy so they gave a bad acting NPC a line with that word. It was only a moment, but it was a moment wasted trying to be edgy, and it stuck with me long enough that I felt I had to write about, so there.

Overall, this game was very enjoyable, in a reflective kind of way. To call it a detective story to me doesn't do it justice. It's more of a "solve a family mystery that is affecting the whole town while dealing with personal demons" kind of game. The ending (which was satisfying) leaves the hint of a sequel, and we better get one!
